So I've been researching wii mods for awhile and have I downloaded a few backups but haven't purchased a wiikey yet. I really want to but I'm scared of wii updates that may cause my wii to break or not function properly.

Will I be safe if I don't play PAL games (I'm using a NTSC US wii) and I won't play any backups of online games just so I don't risk getting banned.

Just making sure everything will be okay if I mod my wii and stick to what was stated in the last paragraph. I don't want to risk anything with my wii.

...thanks

Unfortunately...I do not have any links or information to share at this moment. :D

I would think a junior member would know how to use the search feature of this forum. Heck this subject is covered in a stickied thread in this forum.

Set a good example for the newbies. Search before posting a question that could be answered by searching or reading the stickied thread's..

I wouldn't get the wiikey at the moment. You may wanna read a few thread the reason why. Also the wiikey team are having problem updating their chip for D2B chipset, so future update might be a problem, possibly need to rebuilt the chip. If you recently got your wii, most likely you will end up getting a D2B.

Edit: changed.

@ninjapath

I just wanted to clear things up on your post above. I don't want others to get confused and think that a Wiikey has problems running on a D2B chipset.

If you have a D2C chipset then the Wiikey or any other Modchip will not be compatible with it. I still haven't heard if the D2C chipsets have hit North America yet but the chipset has been found in Europe.

All D2B chipsets and below can be modded with a Wiikey (or any other Modhcip).

The newest problem that has occurred with the Wiikey setup disc is the setup disc not being recognized after updating to the newest 3.0 Wii firmware update. This problem will occur with any chipset version D2B or below. You can still use the Wiikey set up disc by using a GCoS boot up disc then swap it with the Wiikey setup disc. You can get the GCoS boot up disc from the link below...

No, it kinda true. Read this http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=440110&page=8

and after reading this http://www.wiinja.com/Foros/viewtopic.php?t=152

I know they not the same chip, but they are still very identical. The wiikey didn't change their design or anything ever since D2A chipset. So whatever caused the delayed might be that case. That's why i said for the moment, since the updated still didn't come out.

First time I am hearing that the update delay was due to D2B support. You would think that wouldn't be a problem since they already have a set up disc version out for the D2B chipset.

I was surprised too. But at least we know that the D2A and D2B wii chipset are not the same. Maybe Nintendo really did something different to the chipset, and prevent further update from previous modchip. afterall wiikey didn't make any new update ever since D2B came out, and they were the first chip to come out with dvd updated feature. I'm just saying maybe the wiikey might have a flaw here, maybe it best to wait till a updated come out and see if it compatible. Maybe you should checked out other chips since they're all the same. Beside, without the new update the wiikey will still have dre problem with some gamecubes, all other chip worked fine.

Alright thanks...well I got my Wii back in December.

I'm going to research some other mods or just wait for the wiikey update... or maybe just no mod at all. :/

Unfortunately...I do not have any links or information to share at this moment. :D

First of all, you DON'T HAVE TO update to the new firmware to play all the games, so why need to update it, right? I still haven't updated and now I can't access the Shop Channel & the News Channel but I don't care much. The Internet Channel's still working and the most important thing is that as long as I can still play all the games. I will only update if all the new games require so. I don't care if the new firm ware has a clock, new chat feature, or anything else because I bought Wii just to play games, not to chat or shop. Nobody knows how many games in the future will require the new firmware but by then, WiiKey will have the solution. So if I were you, I would mod my Wii but don't update it

Why not update? It's not like it has any sort of negative effect. Plus, once games start to come out with 3.0 integrated, you run the risk of bricking by not having the Wii up to date. Look at the Strikers/BBA/Paper Mario fiasco.

Solution to what? ALL modchips work fine with 3.0.

There is no solution needed when there is no problem.

So far, I played Strikers, BBA and Paper Mario without a tiny problem! It doesn't have the negative effect but then my Wii wouldn't read WiiKey disc and most importantly, I can't play all my roms. To me, updating doesn't give me any positive effect that I need (I don't care about the clock, the new look of News Channel or Shop Channel, or let say even I can chat using the keyboard, I still don't care much as I bought Wii just to play not to chat, shop, or check the news because I can do all those on my computer) I will only update if all the future games come out with 3.0 integrated. If it's not broken, why fix it? I'm not in a hurry to update when I can play all the games just fine AND especially, I can still play my favorite roms. I guess if you just care about the Wii games, not gamecube or emulator, then go ahead and update it. No hurry for me here (I don't want my Wii just like PSP) So far, none of the game require me to update yet (haven't tried Madden 08 though) And even then when it asks, so what, just update it then. No big deal! By the way, I only played original Strikers, Paper Mario; I'll play my backups for those games tonight to see if I have any problem (BBA works just fine for me!)

So, I tried Mario Paper last night and it played without a glitch! I'm happy where I'm at now, my wii plays all the games that I throw in perfectly so no rush for me to update. I don't want any headache after the update and I don't see any benefit for me from the update, so good luck to those with the update. In the mean time, I'll keep reading to gain more knowledge & get updated about this new firmware and also about the modchip

so you're saying it fine if nintendo come up with a new protection in the disc, and now your chip can't play it cuz it can't be updated? really now, i know currently is fine but what if you really need a updated in the future to bypass this. Look at movie, it always come with a new protection to prevent piracy, and new software updated to stop it. Really now no need for updated? what are you thinking man? update is good to have.

I didn't say that I wouldn't update it. I don't want to update it FOR NOW because I can still play all the games (original or backups) I want with no problems at all whatsoever. I don't see any benefit for me with the new update, even if it added the chat or keyboard feature, I still don't care much as I bought wii just to play, not to chat or anything else. I will update only when all the games in the future require version 3.0 to play. What do you mean I can't update? That means all wii came out 6 months back will be bricks? That's BS. I can understand if you can't downgrade. Anyway, I don't want the headache just like PSP (upgrade to 2.3 and above, downgrad back to 1.5 and then upgrade again, well, if you have a modded PSP, you know what I meant

We're not talking about the wii firmware updated. I'm talking about the wiikey update. They're having problem with their new update that supposed to be out ever since May. This is for Wiikey user with wii D2B chipset only, their new updated is being delayed because of it and it affecting D2A delayed as well. The reason for the delayed is because it worked for D2A, but not D2B, it will bricked their console. The wiikey might need to be rebuilt for it to be able to update. The wiinja already rebuilt their chip, so their are safe for future update.

Oh, I see. I thought you were talking about the wii firmware. I talked about apple and you talked about orange :o) Anyway, I got my wii in Dec last year, so I should't be worried about. But since you mentioned about wiikey update, I'd better think about it now. I'll search around to get to know more about this subject.

I ordered a WiiKey and got no setup/boot disk or install instructions. Have hologram, looks genuine, not worried (know how to put the chip in from reading this site). Do I NEED a boot disk?

As long as you play the same region, i dont think theres any risk at all of bricking. I updated using a copy of my strikers game and had zero problems. I don't know if there're brick problems with newer games though. I hear Metroid has a necessary update; has anyone tried it yet?
