PC dvd rom as a PS2 dvd/cd unit?

What's the problem; my ps2 can't run games anymore.

What I have:
ps2 scph-50004 with mars mod-chip

It was all working fine until it stopped reading some games. I opened it and cleaned the lens and it worked fine after problem happened again and than I have calibrated the laser height, it worked again.In 3rd situation when it stopped working and cleaning/calibrating didn't help anymore.

I showed my console to some ps service guru and he said that laser and driver are dead.He said that he put a new laser in console and the chip burned it.

I tried to "fix" it myself but the motor doesn't spin and I can see some red light in laser when I turn on/reset the console.

The solution is to search parts for substitution but I guess this is not cheap idea.

Just an idea; Could I use some computer DVD drive to read from it?They're cheap and quality.

You can't use a computer DVD Drive, check your fuses on the PS2 with a multimeter
