u will have to look up the model of the writer, or just insert a blank dual layer disk in and see if it read it as and 8.5gb blank dvd

If it helps, my PC is a Dell Dimension 1100 (getting on a bit lol).

On most machines you can go to Start-Accessories-System Tools-System information. Then When your in system information on the left side click the plus by components to expand the view and then choose cd-rom That will tell you the information on your drive. Use that model # to do a search to see if your drive it dual layer.

This is what I found

HL GWA - 4164B Black IDE 16x DUAL LAYER DVD±RW Drive

The Spin Doctor is in...

Does your drive have your head spinning? If you need to upgrade your old CD-ROM or CDRW drive, this DVD±RW will do the trick! The GWA-4164B drive can burn dual or single layer DVD+R disks, as well as DVD-R, DVDRW and CDRW disks!

You'll have the best of both worlds: You can watch movies on your computer monitor, or you can burn photos, files, video and other data onto DVD+/-R, DVD+R Dual Layer, DVD±RW or CD-R/RW disks. The 2MB Buffer memory and Buffer under-run technology prevents burning errors.

Features
Read Speed: CD-ROM: 48X Max
DVD-ROM: 16X Max
Write Speed: DVD+R: 16X max
DVD+RW: 8X max
DVD+R Double Layer: 8x
DVD-R: 16X max
DVD-RW: 6X max
CD-R: 48X max
CD-RW: 48X max
• Buffer Size: 2MB
• Interface: ATAPI / E-IDE
• Access Time: DVD-ROM: 140 ms (Random)
• Supported Disc Formats: DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, CD-DA, CD-ROM, Photo-CD, Video-CD, CD Extra, CD Plus, CD-R, CD-RW

This says your answer is YES. You can burn dual layer disc with your installed Burner.

So Unless this is wrong then your all good.

So you know, Office Depot has a special on Office Depot Brand Dual Layer Media (Ritek) thats 25 pack for 27.00. About a buck a peice is as good as your going to get right now. Verb-eez are good but I found so far that the riteks work just fine also. I hear they have a slower load time but easier on the pocket. Just thought I would as that. Might help
