Network adapter stopped working after fan repair

My stock fan's circuitry fried, and I fried the stock fan by soldering it to the on/off switch. So today I soldered a 12v 80mm PC fan to a 5v power and ground point on the motherboard and the fan works!

But now whenever I want to play online, it says "failed to connect to the external network device, please check all cables and try again". I get this message after the DNAS authentication screen, where the PS2 would connect to the main server, but it just takes forever and then that message pops up.

I really don't know what to do, my soldering is nice and neat and there is no unwanted contacts being made. Theres really only one thing to try, and that is to remove the fan and its wires completely and see if it will let me connect. Any help will be much appreciated.

Edit: I just found a 12v spot on the power supply and that powers the fan much more efficiently, but the network adapter still isn't working I hope I didn't fry some important component on the motherboard :(

Edit again: For some reason my network adapter is fried. It didn't work in my friend's PS2 either, it did the same thing. I'm planning on buying another one off of Ebay for like 35 bucks which is 10 dollars more than I paid for it almost a year ago. I hope my motherboard isn't to blame, and doesn't fry the new network adapter that I buy.
