After using flash drives and CDrs I have just bought some CD- rewritable. I want to use these to copy and write over spread sheet files - exel and word. I am unable to do this.

I have windows xp. CDs dont say for music only. When I format on auto screen and then try to copy (burn files to the CD) I get a message saying CD full - The Cd holds 700mb and my files are only 112kb. at the same time there are no files showing on CD.

What am i doing wrong?

does your burner support RW's

i use nero 7 essentials that works fine



nero should have a free download if not its not very expensive

In XP, I 'Copy' the file, then 'Open' the disk and 'Paste'.
Then click 'Write these files to CD'.

You should also have the option of erasing the CD if there are files on it.

Sometimes I find that after reading DVD's then going back to CD's, that the drive won't write.
If I go into the drive properties, select the 'Recording' tab and turn off 'Enable CD recording on this drive', 'apply', exit then reopen properties and turn turn on recording for the drive, it starts behaving properly.
It seems to be an XP quirk.

Thanks for reply KRKM120. I have in the past used floppy discs and then moved to flash drive. However the person I am doing these spreadsheets for does not have a flash drive and they are too big for a floppy disc. I have on occasion used CDrs for back up. This is the first time that I have tried to use CDRWs. By transferring the spreadsheets to my flash drive and then using a different computer I was able to save the excel files to a CDRW. The problem would appear to be with my software which was pre installed by DEL.

The software is DLA and it is showing the CDRWs as full even when there not. No files appear when opened and they still show full or insufficient space when erased.

As I use CDRWs infrequently I am reluctant to purchase alternate software.

If anyone out there is an expert with burning files to CDRWs using DLA I would be grateful.

The way I read it, this software requires that RW media be full formatted (up to three hours!) before the disk can be used.

Thanks ATTAR

I have now managed to drag and burn the files to CDRW using my own computer. Full formatting takes about 11 mins. however when I open these files from the CDRW drive they are read only. I have to save under a different file name. I am therefore no better off than when I used CDR discs.

I didn't mark these files as read only and am at a loss as how to remove this. The files on my hard drive are not marked read only.

Any suggestions

I think that any file on a CD or CD-RW is read only - unlike a floppy where the file is simply replaced, on a CD-RW the file is replaced, but the space that it formally occupied is lost until the CD is erased or formatted.
Also, I don't know if XP can erase the CD-RW now that it has been formatted by DLA, possibly DLA would have to be used again.
