Not in regards to + or - but rather, brand.

DVD-R seem to have better compatibility with Wii systems but DVD+R and RW have been successfully used by others. You will need to try different brands and formates till you find some that your Wii system is best compatible with.

The most popular for Wii are Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden.

Is this because of compatibility or is it to keep the laser from overworking?

Both but mainly compatibility as the Wii drive is picky about media. Lower quality disks tend to lead to more disk read errors, if they even work in the first place.

Poor quality media can damage a drive over time but you're talking a loooong time. Not something you really have to worry about.

I have some TDKs that are REALLY nice to print on, but not so great to record games on. My Taiyo Yudens work much more nicely. I have had zero problems with the TYs, and a couple problems with the TDKs. It depends on the game, burn speed, and a little bit of luck. I would suggest just sticking with the TYs since I have had a perfect track record with them.

I had a few extra Maxell dvd-r discs laying around so I just used those. No disc errors. I'll probably switch to Verbatim to save the laser.
