A few days ago, my PS2 started to act funny, and when I would play my games the music in the background would stall and would repeat part of the tune over and over again like a broken record. And it had done it a few times afterwards when I reset it. It also will make noise that it didn't make before like the disk is banging into something and like it could be scratching the disk. It hasn't really scratched any of the disks, but I am worried it could do damage to itself or my games. I have had it for about a year, so I don't think it is getting worn out. I have checked everything, and nothing seems to be wrong with it. I was wondering if there was something I could do to fix it because I didn't want to have to send it in.
I played a movie yesterday and it froze, so I cleaned the dust out a bit, but it is still stalling a few times when I play games, so I don't know if that is the problem, or I didn't clean it out enough.
There is a good chance your laser has worn out. What kind of media did you use for your backups? Did you have those self-printed labels on your disk? PS2 is a very delicate console, with bad media or those self-printed labels on your CD, your laser would worn out much less than a year.
I fried mine in 3 months, with very little playing time, with bad media, printed labels.

Sorry, but I don't know what all of that is. I don't get into all of those things. I never really use weird stuff on my PS2. All I use is PS2 games I buy in the stores, and a few times I will play my movies on it. And also, all I use for cleaning is a soft cloth to clean inside and out of it.

well if you don't use your PS2 for game backups this is quite easy. how many movies have you watched on your PS2? Do any of them contain more than a few small scratches?
The laser on the PS2 is weaker than many higher quality DVD players. IMHO the PS2 was not meant to be a dedicated DVD player. Don't listen to what $ony says. The PS2 is better as just a game machine. If your PS2 games or DVDs have lots of scratches, the laser has to seek more often. The more it seeks, the lower its lifespan.
If your laser is very weak, you will hear a grinding type noise and/or the laser skip as it moves between tracks. If it does this a lot on some DVDs, look for scratches.
If your PS2 works OK on some games & not others, its usually the disc itself. By investing in an external HDD linked to your PS2, you can record what you want on there. And keep the laser from going bad as quickly.
DRE repairs
Well I have played most of my movies on it, but I don't think that they have major scratches on them or anything, but I mostly play my movies on a DVD player in the living room. I think you are right about the laser wearing out, because it has been making funny noises and it froze a few times. But I was playing a PS2 game when it happened. Is there any way to fix it? Can you replace it? If I keep using my DVDs on it, do you think it will get worse?
