So there were unlucky people who slipped in to the Wii modding scene right before/during this dark period (it seems things were simpler just a few weeks ago). Now theres a lot more questions that need answers.

- What is the config disk? Do you need it to use backups in your native region? Can the Wiikey be used without the config disk? If you do need a config disk, what is the simplest way to use one post Wii update?

- Has the Wii update disabled any features of the Wii and/or Wiikey? Are there ways to reenable these features?

- What sort of things will brick your Wii? How do you avoid them?

- For those new to the Wiikey scene, what is the best source of information on how to install and use them (besides forums)?

I'm trying to gather information that, while basic, is very important to all Wiikey users. Most Wiikey owners just want use their Wiikeys in the safest, simplest, most effective way (to use their backups/homebrew). All productive comments/suggestions are welcome.

Great list of questions Would love to see the answers. I am one of though who bought a wii only 30 day ago. Did not buy the mod chip yet and only intended to use it to play back-up of my game. I already am having troubles with one of my originals. All these Brick this.. Becarful when... posts have scarred me from Modding. The Soldering to the chip thing is only a small problem that I can get around.

The config disk is used to change the internel setting of your modchip. Features such as drive speed, audiofix and region overide. The genuine Wiikey can be used without the config disk but there are reports of some clones needing to be "setup" with the disk before they work. As for using the disk post 3.0x, you'll have to use GCOS swap workaround until the WiiKey team release an updated setup disk. Search the forum there is a how-to around here somewhere.

The 3.0 update has had no effect on any wii modchips other than the inability to boot homebrew GC disks. No native Wii features have been removed or disabled.

Physical damage and updating your wii with a firmware from another region than your wii's default. Read the sticky for more info and workarounds.

Youtube has some videos but the forum guides you mention are by far the best source of info.
