Almost everyone has encountered those ever so annoying Messenger Service based popups telling you everything from penile enhancement to car loans! While a firewall/popup blocker can do the job of dealing with these, sometimes the rule sets for such programs interfere with other stuff. Here is how to properly deal with those popups:
1. Click Start --> Run
2. Type services.msc
3. On the right hand of the screen look for an entry called Messenger. The description for this service is: Transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. This service is not related to Windows Messenger. If this service is stopped, Alerter messages will not be transmitted. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start. . Double click on this entry.
4. Click the Stop button. This stops the currently running session of the service
5. Change the Startup Type to Disabled this will prevent it from starting up the next time you boot up your computer.
6. Click OK
7. Close the Services box and restart the machine
Edit: you can also nail the various TCP/13x ports if you're more comfortable with ur firewall :)

Thanks so much. I was on the phone all day with my sister trying to help her with just this issue. It was insane trying to work with her while all these pop ups were covering the screen. Thanks again.

I was just wondering if this might block anything else that may need to come through?

Great Tip - Thanks, but I have W98.

Thanks, suep6

I dont think pre-W2K has the Messenger.exe service running in the background so you wont be able to turn it off. I do suspect however you and I are not talking about the same popups.
I would reccommend a firewall and/or popup stopper for W98 users. :-)

You might want to have a look at Gibson Research Corporations site, under the Free Stuff button you'll find loads of cool security goodies, Firewall checkers etc, and specifically look at ?Shoot the Messenger? it?s the most popular download most of the time

The messenger service only blocks popups that use the messenger (i.e., netsend) protocol. You will still get otheer types of popups so the best choice of action is to get a popup killer or a firewall etc. :-)

Most, if not all, firewalls do popup killing for youso there isnt really a need to buy a popup killer.

Shoot the messenger is good because it is quick; you don't have to go looking for where to do what. Unforetunately, it doesn't show you where it goes, it just goes and does it.
The popups that are being mentioned here are not your typical popups that you see on most sites. (AdMuncher is effective in blocking at lot of those and can be found by search with google, do understand I am not spamming for the program but trying to help folks.)
The messenger popups are big grey adds that show up in the center of your screen. Typically they show up after you have moved on from the site you got them from and a lot of them have timers on them so that they show up after you have left the internet.
Mostly I resent them because they are stealing your bandwidth to load those ads. While that is not a large concern for broadband, if you are running 56k all of a sudden you find that your connection is running far slower than it should. When they first came out, I was using 56k.
