Someone must know someone that could write a utility to read the reflectiviy of our media and the power level of the laser and if it had to max out to get a read level. this would give us an idea of the chances that the consumer decks will read them if we burn something to it. I burt a bunch of disks last week that would only read in one DVD playerout of 3. then the next one would read on none but the burner. We all know that a along with Iding the disks we would not waste a ton of time burning rubish if we could check a few in a batch of 100 disks before we start to use them. It would be really cool if it were a non distructive test that mabye worked on just the read laser and did not write to it. Acutaly I would like the option of both. Any volinteers?

Don't think such a program could be made,
A more practical thing to do is to stay the hell away from cheap media, it's cheap for a reason you know.......

Your point is well taken, however when you buy 100 disks at a time and order the same price media from a distributer that you ordered last month but don't get the same type it would be nice to have a little proof that they have a problem. In my case the disks I got last month for 84 cents each where flawless, my latest order they have aggreed to take back. The issue is to enable us to check the media to see if it is cost effective and how close to the edge of not working it is. You may have a ton of money to spend on media but why buy disks in lots of 100 for $2.00 each if a disk for $1.00 will be all that it needs to be.
In my case the last set of disks were 84 cents each and were perfect, this time I burnt 8 out of 10 coasters, The supplier aggreed to take them back so I am not out anything except some time and the gin I drank burning a few disks again. The bottom line here is so many people have no idea what they bought or how good it is untill they spend an hour burning a disk and then they still don't know if it has a good probebluiiliy of playing in a consumer deck. The informaiton is there in the burner lets have a look at it.

I see your point on that one,

BUT, that's the hidden price of 99% of cheap media, Batch issues. The quality is too variable , hence why it's cheap. More expensive media has better quality control so the issues you've experienced are MUCH,MUCH rarer...
Not to mention the longevity issues with cheaper media, but that's another discussion altogether.

Just read the posts from ppl that crop up every now & again complaining about some sub >$1 media they bought and are having problems with. The same thing happened with CD-R's, just look at that forum if you don't believe me.

I know that there is some utility out there that checks write speeds on a disc and shows how well your burner will react to the disc but I don't know the name, some of the other members might be able to help me out and let you know the name of that program.

First rule never say something is impossible, {it usually never holds true}

Just think about it for a sec, how is it possible that certain software can tell what speed CD/DVD media that you have in your drive?

Or how does it know the media in the drive is -R, +R, or +RW

If there is a way to tell the previous there is a way to tell the quallity of the disk.

Someone should market it and make a killing

Thankyou Diablo60
Players adjust the laser power to a level perminting them to read without errors, and recorders adjust the laser power before a burn along with everything you mentioned. The point of this utility would be to determine if the laser had to max out to read or write and the reflectivity of the dye.
It sure would be nice to know wether the disk that I just burnt for example wont play in a consumer deck because it is below the lasers abuility to read rather than sit here and wonder if I burnt it wrong. I am lucky to have 3 consumer dvd players and two in computers. Still I have found that an rw disk that read yesterday in one player wont read today in the same player but will read in a third. I am just looking for a utility that will give me some type of benchmark. Hopefully this post won't be too far down the path before someone who is familier enough with programing to use his/her knowledge to this purpose.Later bud

Mychucky & Diablo60,

Think this post by a technical guy working for BTC (a DVD burner manufacturer) should give you some insight into what goes into the Reality of how drive manufacturers make all the various makes of blank media work with their drives.
