Using analog stick in place of D pad??

Hey everyone, I've been wondering if anyone knows of any way you can patch a game, particulary PSX games, so that it would substitute the left analog stick for the D-PAD. I really wanna be able to do this, especially for Final Fantasy 7 and Xenogears, its really annoying running around with the D-pad :-p.

I think I remember reading a long time ago somewhere that it can be done with codes, like action replay, gameshark, codebreaker, if anyone knows anything about that plz lemme know.

My last ditch effort would be to open it up and resolder some wires, if thats even possible, again if anyones ever tried this out and knows if it works please lemme know :D
