Have been using DVD X COpy and Xpress for backing up dvd's. Consisently DVD Xpress has one problem or another.

and have tried the 'trial' version of this program. Interestingly, for DVD's that Xpress would have numerous freezes, stutters, etc...
DVDFab was seemless, though it only takes the DVD and places it on the hard drive, removing the FBI, etc protections/warnings.
Once there, DVDShrink will cleanly shrink it to 1 disk size if necessary, and the movies Ive played back so far are seemless.
I have not done movies that are split onto two dvd's yet, but I am impressed that this program will take the movies off the DVD, so far problem-less, and for the ones I have done, much more trouble free (freeze free for troubled movies) than DVD Xpress.
I hope it moves forward to incorporate an internal 'shrinking' algorythym, as well as a burn engine. Nero seperately works just fine.
I also note on DVD Xpress some disks that had flaws onthe write, on rare occasions I could slow down the write speed to a X2 from a 4X, exiting from Xpress after the DVD is on hard drive, and then use Nero and have a successful disk... though I hated using X2 write speeds.
I have been able to burn all the DVD's at 4X with the DVDFab written to hard drive files so far, and have backed up all the movies that had freezes from the past, (using the clean originals), and now have thrown away the older DVD XPress dvd's with freezes...
The price is much lower, and the site claims all future updates are free once you pay for the full version. ($40.00), with coming inclusion of a burn engine....
Even with this being a much newer(?) program, it seems to have solved some reading/writing issues which DVD Xpress remains comtaminated with that I have had so far, though 321 Studios does honeltly works hard at their product.
Most movies I've done so far, have only needed a 'little' compression with DVD Shrink... and what is nice is that if you use the 'movie only' option, similar to Xpress, once loaded into DVD Shrink (the files loading in the first .ifo, it then reads the rest of the ifo's/vob's), and all of the trailers and other clutter are not present. If you delete the ifo/buf and vob files in the Video_ts directory, assigned with names of number 2, that will remove the DVDFab logo at the end of the movie.
Currently a few more steps, but getting the DVD files off the DVD correctly, and onto the hard drive appears to be the hardest part, and DVDFab so far is batting 100% for me on 10 re-do DVD where Xpress had freezes.
Unlike Xpress, there is no startup logo, like 321 Studios, which hangs on my HS 2.

Wow, DVDFab will do the same things as DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink or Smart ripper. It will rip (unencryt a dvd) and place the files on a hard drive. And best of all, it costs more than the others (which are all free)!
Those 3 rippers also do not put any extra frames in like xcopy or dvdfab.

Thank you for the info, I will downoad it just incase. But the freezes i sometimes get is not the dvd, but my player. My sony player is 5 years old. I'm lucky it even plays them. The reason I know is because, I take the same freezing disc and try it on newer players, from my parents and brother, and the dvd is 100% fine. I just ordered a new Sony DVD player that say dvd-r+r -rw+rw support on it. The only real problem is copying at 4x. I have to do them in 2x. One question. If I install DVDFAB will it conflict in any way with dvd xcopy xpress.

I agree those others are free (WOW).. and the trial is just a trial. I hope to see some program do all that Xpress is supposed to do, with finesse for the various systems it is on, and perform consistently and stably.
DVD Shrink .et. al. do their individual jobs well. None of those, I believe, strip the DVD down to the basic movie automatically, as Xpress or DVDFab, and maybe some others.
If the originators of DVDFab follow through as their site states, not unlike 321 Studios, they will incorporate a burner, and will also have to get the shrinking done...
From the origination date of DVD X Copy/Xpress to current, just getting the DVD to the hard drive has been inconsistent with 321 Studios software. DVD shrink does a good job, but ultimately I am looking for a one stop solution, which I have not found yet.
Xpress is close, but not fully consistent/stable for me.

It does not seem to load in anything other than itself, as it has no burner at this time as I can tell, so no conflicts for me. All software is loaded onto a main directory, and some registry mods as appropriate.
What I really enjoy is the (building?) confidence of having a program that will strip the DVD down to the basic movie, easily, and accurately, which is what I hope for Xpress also, but that version has yet to come for me, though it has apparently worked fully for some folks.
DVDFab produced files, once burned with Nero, then those DVD's can be copied easily for additional backups, hedging against the kids frisbee uses.
I noticed that mod'd Xpress DVd's, removing the 321 Studo's logo, allows for duplicating the (Dup'd0 DVD with no muss or fuss (not via Xpress).
Still looking for a one step solution. DVDFab seems to have, for me, a more stable platform, as it gets the files correctly and consistently so far, to the hard drive, with the ifo done correctly. That sems to have been one major issues solved. Burning appears to be easy compared to solving the breakdown of the DVD and xfering to the hard drive, so if DVDFab remains consistent, then it would seem the hardest problem may be solved.
In the end we each have to go with what works.

What good is ripping the movie automatically if it doesn't compress and burn. So you have a system that will when you open the program, will automatically rip the dvd to the hard drive with one click. (Does it automatically create the folders that you want and where you want). But then you still have to open up DVD Shrink or DVD2One, find the folder, and ?create a new folder for the compressed version. And still you have to burn the compressed version using a burning program such as Nero or recordnow.
This is better than using shrink alone because it is fewer steps? I open shrink, click open disc, click reauthor, drag the movie, click backup into the folder I want and then burn.

Hello everyone,
I'm a bit confused here.
Has everyone overlooked the fact that DVDShrink is able to ripp the whole DVD, or just the main film? It is your choice. In fact, if you do not want to shrink the main film, you can spread it over 2 or 3 DVD?s, once again your choice.
The advantage I find with DVDFab, is you can take a whole DVD with no compression and ripp it to two DVD?s. Additionally, it has a screen to ask you to load the second DVD, which you do not get with DVDShrink.
Benefits of DVDShrink; you can compress the main film to fit on one DVD.
Benefits of DVDFab; you can split a DVD to two DVD?s with menus.
Drawbacks; They are now charging for DVDFab, which wasn?t the case earlier this year. Basically, we should be happy that DVDFab still exists at all. In the country where it was originally programmed, it is now illegal to produce such programs. It appears as if the author of DVDFab either sold his program to someone in the USA, or he opened up an office there.
