Seem to be having some issues playing back DTS-CD's and SACD's on my PS£ atm. Previously, DTS-CD's worked fine with no issues at all. However, whenever I play them now, all I get is noise! I have selected 44.1khz (and the other 2 that go along with it!) in the menu but still no joy. Cant help but feel the CD upsampling may have wrecked the chances of DTS-CD playback, could this be true?
As for SACD, everything was great with 2 channel SACD's playing back at 176khz PCM and 5.1's at 88khz. Now SACD's still work fine but not at the frequencies mentioned before, its just pumped out as plain ol' PCM! I have went back over all the bloody options but still got nowhere!!
Has anyone else had similar experiences or have a fix for this? Thanks
Just so you know that you are not alone, I am also having this problem. I read somewhere else to change the audio output to 48 as oppsed to 44.1 etc. I have done that and still nothing for DTS CD playback. Just "white noise".
I have PS3 firmware version 1.9. I have the ps3 connected vua HDMI into an Onkyo SR 805. I originally thought it was a receiver issue but now I know better.
Also as an FYI I have a toshibaHD DVD player and it plays the DTS CD and it ias also connected into the 805 via HDMI. I considered hooking the PS3 via optical to see if that fixed it would be a pain to constantly have to switch the settings on the PS3 and receiver. Also considering the HD DVD player is connected the same way as the PS3 I really think it is a PS3 issue.
Maybe some folks will be able to help us out...additionally if I find a fix I will contact you.
Well it looks like it may well be the CD upsampling thats causing the problems. Like you, I do not intend on switching from hdmi to optical whenever I was to listen to DTS-CD's (if it does actually work!). The only pain is that my PS3 is my only method of playing those CD's as my trusty PS2 has now retired and is gathering dust in the cupboard!
Scorsese - do you have any SACD's that you can try out to see if you have the same problems as I do? Seems like the latest firmware update is a step in the wrong direction in some respects!
I do have a collection of SACD's, BTW nice to see that others are still wanting hi-res music.
I just tried The Police hits SACD and according to my receiver it is standard PCM. My reciever will handle up 192 so if the PS3 would put it out the receiver should show it. However I bought the ps3 and immediatley installed the updates so I am not able to tell what my receiver would have showed had I not installed the newest firmware. Basically I am not sure if the reciever would actually say the KHZ level or not. I am 99% sure it would though. But right now it is just showing PCM multi. Is there a way to see on the PS3 screen what KHZ is being preoduced, if so I am unaware.
Oh also I tried both of the audio output options on the PS3 with this test (I.E. 48 and 44.1 etc)
Seems like we are the only two who care or know what this format is, maybe together with a miracle we can solve the problem. I just don't know what else to try.
I agree with you that this may have been a step in the wrong direction.
Just as a personal preference it seems like when the audio output is set to 48 the SACD sounds a bit better. I take pride in my listening ability but it could be all in my head. What is your opinion? If I had to guess you are from England or somewhere in Europe, if my assumption is correct do you know of any sites that ship SACDs overseas for reasoanble money. In the U.S. there is no market for them and I sometimes have to pay 40 USD for one SACD.
You were close with England, im just a wee bit north in Scotland!
Well based on our issues, I guess its safe to assume that its the latest firmware that is causing these issues. I couldnt say the exact firmware where all worked well unfortunatly. Check out here for some info, however there is no mention of our problem but I have requested that the site updates:
I havent checked for any differences between 44.1khz & 48khz on any SACD's yet, but if I notice a difference I will post back. I couldnt say I collect SACD's, mainly because there is so little choice. I do however like Beethovens piano sonatas at high res, I did notice a staggering difference in sound quality over what im used to. I didnt realise how powerful a piano can be! Im not a fan of the genere either, I only bought it because of the original Resident Evil where 'moonlight sonata' is played on the piano and I absolutley loved it!
As for SACD's, they're pretty hard to come by over in Europe. play.com is ok, but their stock is always limited and I dont think they ship outside the UK. The best place is probably uk amazon marketplace but then again, most of the traders there are from the states trying to make a quick buck out of the inflated prices here in the UK. The only other suggestion I have is Tower Records in the states. They seem to have a huge collection at reasonable prices but you have surely used them already.
Anyways, if I find a fix or anything, I will be straight back to let you know and again, thanks for your input!
I thought id better update this thread for those that are interested. Yuri over at www.ps3sacd.com kindly asked the peeps over at his forum for their input and they came up with the simple, but effective solution.
To enable DTS-CD playback, make sure you have CD sampling set to 44/88/176khz, then go to the audio options, optical or hdmi and de-select 2 channel 88 & 176khz. From there, your sorted so like me, you can dig out your dts-cd collection again!
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been searching for it seems like months, finally we have our burning question answered. I had basically given up. I think we are the only 2 people that care. Very easy fix and easy to change back.
The PS3 is pretty much the only thing I need, if it would just play HD DVD then I could get rif of my Toshiba player. LOL
Thanks so much for posting it on here and not forgetting about me mate!!!!
