What I want to do is rip vob files from DVD, demux the mpeg-2 stream out, and save them into mpeg-2 files. I've used SmartRipper, DVDDecrypter, VobEdit, TMPGEnc, DVD2AVI, and a slew of other utilities, and nothing actually works. I can only ever get one of these two results: I end up with a file that pretends to be an mpeg file, but Media Player can't play it (without using a DVD decoder), or I end up with a mpeg file that was created by decoding and re-encoding, thereby altering the video quality. I want the original untouched mpeg-2 stream, saved in an mpeg-2 file, so that Media Player can read it with it's own software mpeg-2 decoder.

Any ideas how to do this?

Lots of people think that they are already doing this, but they are not. Play your ripped, demuxed, saved-to-mpeg files with Windows Media player. If it plays, click on File, Properties. You will see that the decoder that Media Player is using is your DVD software's decoder, not the mpeg-2 decoder included in Media Player.

Why Use Media Player??? Media Player Sucks Big time for Mpeg2 Playback...WMP Ignores the Aspect Ratio Flags on Mpeg2 files and it doesn"t Use a Decomb Filter so you get interlace artifacts on playback...So Just Don"t use it...If you don"t have a Software DVD player then Message me with your E-Mail and I"ll hook you up with one....
If ripping with SmartRipper you can set to To Rip all of the VOB files to a Single VOB file or a Mpeg2 Video stream and a Single AC3 audio Stream.....

It's not really just about media player. I just want to get the MPEG-2 stream that can be played by a standard mpeg-2 decoder, not a DVD decoder.

Super DVD Ripper will do this for you.
It allows you to convert your DVD straight to MPEG2.

Koola, thanks, I'll give that a try and report back...

Minion, yeah, my version of Media Player has a software mpeg-2 decoder, and it works. But when you rip from DVD, it requires a DVD decoder to play back, not just a software mpeg-2 decoder.

It's not really media player that I'm after here. Maybe I should ask aother question:

Is there a utility out there that can read DVDs or VOB files and capture still-frames, in the unmodified YcBcR format, NOT already-converted to RGB format, because that alters the original data.

The reason I wanted to extract the mpeg-2 stream in the first place was so that I could then write some code to extract the untouched YcBcR data, but if something out there could already do that, then great...
