DVD ripped to external hard drive doesn't work

The other day I ripped a DVD to my PC, and it worked just fine, still does. Then, from the same computer, I ripped it to my external 500G iomega external hard drive, under the exact same settings. However, while the VOB files on my PC open up fine, when I try to open the ones on my external hard drive it says that "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because the disc prohibits playback in your region of the world. You must obtain a disc that is intended for your geographic region." Note that I burned both files as region-free, and the ones on my computer work fine and are read by Windows Media Player.

Any idea what's going on?
