I recently bought a Wii from HK from a store which "claims" to sell pre-modded Wii Consoles with Wiikey. The Wii is Japanese (like Japanese menus etc..), so does that mean it uses NTSC-J and not PAL? I tried booting up a PAL backuped version of Mario Strikers and some kind of error message in Japanese popped up. I tried using the setup-disc v 1.2 (burned in the bootabledisc_JAP option) and the Wii sees it as a gamecube disc. When I try booting it, the same error message pops up in Japanese. Does that mean the Wii doesn't have Wiikey installed? o yeah, the firmware version is 3.0J

Must have been a bad install. You know those people in HK....

And do not put in a game that is different of the Wii's region. It could brick it.

It probably means they updated it for you to 3.0 BUT did not provide you the correct setup disc.

You need to do is make the wiikey config disc using GCOS, guides found in this forum.
Then boot that up and turn on the region free setting.
That way it will let you run all regions.

Have you tried a NSTC-J disc on the machine yet?
And like the other person said becareful when you load new US games on it, because if it contains a firmware update it may brick it. Best is to check for firmware via internet before using any new game that comes out after last update.

thanks for your replies. I managed to boot up the wiikey using configdisc v 1.2b. It's because my firmware is 3.0, that's why the configdisc v1.2 from the wiikey website doesnt work. I heard you can prevent region bricks using a program called wii blocker? Does this program remove all traces of the firmware updater on the game all the time?

Yes. However there are 2 cases in which it will cause a game not to work, these are with "Boogie" and "Metroid Prime 3". You should also be aware that not all imports are compatible. There is a well maintained list here, with sections 3.5 & 3.6 being applicable to your system.

i think your answer should be yes SO far
if at some point the update is hidden and prevents wiiblocker from disabling the update, then this thread could bite you in the bum if someones wii gets bricked.
not that they know where you live or anything hehe
