dell laptop wont boot?

my friend has a dell inspiron laptop...that all the sudden wont boot...it just has a black screen with a few lines in the left corner...could this be a virus or a hardware issue?..usually a hard drive failure has a blue screen right?....
and i dont think he was running any virus protection either...{i know what a dummy}..

Theres so much that could be wrong I don't know were to start. The video could be shot but thats unlikely. There could be a problem with nearly any PC component, or the windows install could be corrupted.

thanks for your help pea,,,,i bought a boot disk off the net and got it up and running again...i guess it just crashed?

Honestly I don't know. Your description although detailed was pretty broad and narrowing down the problem would have been very hard.
