How much can you actually do on the PS3?

Hello Afterdawn,
I recently got a bit of extra cash and I just started to think of what I wanted to use it for. I need a new computer as sharing with my brother is getting a bit annoying, so initially I was planning on buying a laptop. Then today, I started playing some Metal Gear games and now I suddenly have the urge to get a PS3, ready for the release of MGS4.
Only thing is, I'm still gonna need a PC for homework and email. So it got me thinking, if Programmers are able to find a way to put msn, IR keyboards and even windows xp onto a PSP, how close is the PS3 environment to doing the same. I haven't dont much reading in terms of the PS3 being used for more than just games and movies, but intend to soon before making any purchases. I just want some input from the guys here, does the PS3 right now have the ability to be used as a word processor and instant messenger as well as a gaming machine?
Please paste any links or articles for me to read up on, I'm really hoping this stuff is out there.

I don't know about windows but the ps3 has the ability to have linux installed, and all of the linux distros for ps3 are free. I use gaim while on linux which is the linux version of aim. It comes installed with mozilla firefox for all of your web browsing needs. Now it's not as good as a stand alone pc but basic computing needs can be accomplished. I'm able to burn cds, download torrents, email, browse the internet, play retro games(snes genesis nes), and not to mention that it's teaching me something other than windows. If I did not have a computer I believe that I could survive with my ps3 linux. As far as the entertainment factor you have a kick ass game system, a digital media reciever(that way if you ever do get your own computer you can stream your pictures, videos, and music over your network), a decent online network that's free with the upcoming innovative Home, and of course a Blu-Ray player.

the ps3 is like a computer.if i were u id buy the ps3 i completely agree with oozerooo bcuz im installing my linux once im finished downloading it.

Thanks guy, thats great to hear. I was just wondering about the types of inputs. I can plug up my wireless mouse and keyboard yes? And is there any linux based word processers as I'll be needing one for essays.
If these two are a yes then looks like I wil lbe joining the PS3 club :D
Also I would like to know, how long would keeping your PS3 one would be safe. If I will be using the PS3 as a computer, I will be keeping it on maybe 5-8 hours a day. My room iscurrently in the basement and it is a little bit dusty, my old computer had dust filters keeping dust out, is there one for the PS3 also?

i guess i can say welcome to the ps3 club :D i love mine. lol i didnt pay for it so to me it wasnt a price thing.but after the price cut try finding a 60gb version.

going to buy one off a site called usedottawa, people post there used items for sale. Found one used 1 month for 450 CAN that is a pretty good deal if you ask me, not as good as a free one though :P

yea it took a long time tho.i had to sign up an a site do an offer and find 13 people to do the same.but i eventually got it.it was worth it but i was so pissed for so long but enjoy the ps3:D

paid 425 uk money for mine .the tv recorder sounds nice when it arrives .i am sure xbox is good also .got a free dvd with me ps3 casino royale .amazing picture.also upscales any dvd to the best possibility .do you like m/soft or sony .me like all and every sony ,apart from phones .like samsung .just ordered a g600 sold me d900 for a 100.2 month left on me contract .
psp 2.71 to some m firmware
ps3 60 gig ,now with internal 320 gig
2x 1tb ext hdd for you know what

I know a guy on my buddie list that never turns his off so I think you will be ok. I play mine every night for hours at a time and have had no problems.
