I got a free XBOX that someone threw to the curb, I know it probably has something wrong with it, but I have no games or controllers to test it and find out exactly what the problem is. I just have the power and audio/video cable, but I havent even tried it yet.
I really want to get a hard drive installed in my PS2, and I have did hours of research on installing hard drives in a PS2. I know all about using winhiip to format the hard drive, and using it to add iso's and stuff. Also I know about using hdloader and hdadvance, I also did some other research on how to configure the network adapter to accept western digital drives.
Now, I basically want to know if anyone has ever tried this before, and If you have, was it just as easy as installing a seagate, maxtor, or western digital hard drive? I think the XBOX hard drive is an 8gb seagate, and I hope this type of hard drive will line up correctly with the network adapter.
Any information will be much appreciated, thanks.

Does anybody know if an XBOX hard drive will work? I found out it's either an 8gb western digital or a 10gb seagate.
Edit: I got the hdd out of the xbox, and it is a seagate so that means it is 10gb. It fits perfectly onto the ps2 network adapter, probably just as well as a maxtor or the official sony hdd.
Even though it fits perfectly, I couldn't get the hard drive to work when I installed it up to my IDE PCI card. I hooked it up using a ribbon cable that only has one IDE plug on each end, and I tried setting the drive to master, slave, and cable select but it seems that my PCI IDE card cannot read the hard drive. The PCI card just acts like it is searching for the hard drive, but it does not detect it which also prevents my operating system from booting.
The only thing I could try is hooking the hard drive up to one of the ribbon cables that are currently being used by my DVD/CD drives. But I'm starting to believe it is not even worth the trouble of unorganizing all of my cables which are tucked away in the spot underneath my DVD/CD drives, which is where I would need to place the hard drive.
Since there is XBOX data all over the hard drive, will HD Loader or HD Advance still be able to format the drive while it is installed in my PS2?

The harddrive is locked to the xbox therefore it wont work. You will have to unlock it first and the only way I know of is to install a chip into the xbox and unlock it with Config magic. Good luck.

yes, thank you for the reply. Since I don't have a modded xbox I can't get the password from the south bridge chip, so I will try to run a firmware update on the drive, and hopefully this will unlock it.
Edit: I failed at successfully unlocking the drive, I couldn't find a working firmware update for the Seagate ST310014A hard drive. There is a program called HDD Unlock, and that program says it can unlock the hard drive but I have to pay for it. So screw that, I will just buy another hard drive to use in my PS2 if I am still interested in doing that after I get my modchip.
Thanks for you're help.

You could try unlocking it by tuning on the XBOX n right when it is a tthe XBOX logo unplug the hard drive, you don't have a video wire i guess, sou would just have to guess when to unplug it. The power wire is the same as 1 part of the PS2.

This really works? But I do have the audio/video cable so I will know exactly when to do this, so I just unplug the 4 pin molex power connector or the IDE cable?

As soon as you power off the drive it will lock again unless you download a program called xboxhdm and hotswap.. then you need to unlock the drive to make it stick unlocked.
There is a seagate app which you can try as well.. it overwrites all the data on the drive, as a side effect blanking the locking status but I can't remember the link apart from it's on llammas xbox page.

I looked on llamma's page, and the only app I saw was the firmware update thing, but that is not for my hard drive model number it is for the rubber jacketed one.
I've browsed around everywhere on the net trying to find a solution to unlocking the hard drive, they're might be one on seagate's official web site. But they're site is too confusing and I can't find any firmware updates for my hard drive, and if there is some sort of app on that site that will unlock my drive I will not be able to find it because the website confuses me and I can't even be on that site to 2 minutes without closing it.
I might try the HDD Unlock Wizard program, but I'm not sure which unit card I must purchase, its either this one or this one.
The first one is cheaper but I'm not sure if I am allowed to use it on a single drive I think it may only be used with a bulk amount of drives.
