Update HDLoader via USB Mass Storage?

I have a PS2 with HDD, running the MC Exploit with LaunchELF 3.4 booting HDLoader 8b.
I've read that for God of War 2 you need a special version of HDLoader. I know I can install a newer version by burning a CD that installs it, just like when I installed it the first time, but I saw an option in LaunchELF for running files from USB Mass Storage devices. Is it possible for me to use that to do it rather than wasting a CD?
