Can HD Loader format hard drives with data on them already?

I want to use a seagate hard drive in my PS2, but it was previously installed in an XBOX console and it has all sorts of XBOX crap on it I assume. I couldn't get my PCI IDE card to detect the drive, so now I can't use winhiip to format it. I was wondering if HD Loader or HD Advance has the capabilities to format a drive that already has data written on it? I'm looking forward to any sort of information on this subject, thanks.
