Need Recommendation - Edit AVI MPEG VOB files

I am looking for an inexpensive software package that will allow me to quickly and easily edit AVI, MPEG, VOB, etc. files. I want to take out unwanted material and then save the file to a format (e.g., mpeg-2) that will allow me to compile the clips in a dvd authoring app.

Any links, posts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
