sorry to start a new thread but having seen many thread all about the same subject i didnt find a central post to write in so made my own.
I have had a PAL wii for some time it has a wii key (original) and everything worked fine when playing backups it was also easy to solder i used wires install.
I have never had a reading problem with any burnt backup and life was good.
I turned my wii on today and it wont read anything. It was on version 2.2 so i updated the firmware via the internet and am now on v3e and it still wont read any disks. (i spent some 5 hours reburning/trying everything to get it to read disks under 2.2 - i also opened the box up and checked the mod install with a meter and everything looks fine)
So im happy my wii is fine. Im happy my media works fine as it has done for the last 6 months of daily use.
Something has stopped it working also when i updated version 3 and ran the updater again it said was i sure i wanted to install anymore updates as some updates may stop hardware modifiied wiis from working properly. So i didnt update it beyond version 3e.
OK i said - i will check to see if firmware on my wii key has been updated and it has its now on 1.9b so i got that, burnt it but i cant update the firmware as it wont read the dvd (or any burnt dvd).
all originals play fine.
i think i need to go back some firmware versions for my wii is there a way to do this?
Not sure if this will work but wiikey have put out a recovery
disc for the 1.9b update. it possible might restore your firmware
back to a stable version but I haven,t had to use it (Thank god)
heres the read me file that comes with the recovery disc..
.------------------------------------------------------------------.
- wiiKey recovery disc v1.9b -
------------------------------------------------------------------

Recovering from a bad flash
---------------------------
Please note that this is an emergency procedure which should not
have to be performed. If the flashing was interrupted for any
reason the chip is left in a state where it cannot operate fully.

Burning the recovery disc image
-------------------------------
As media support in Recovery Mode is limited we recommend you
use DVD-R only for the recovery disc. Burn it with Toast, Image
Burner, or cdrecord.

Performing the update
---------------------

- Switch on Wii and eject any disc in drive
- Insert recovery disc and reset Wii
- Wait for at least 3 minutes. There will *not* be any sign that
the wiikey is recovering, and the recovery disc will not appear
in Wii menu.
- Power off the Wii and switch it back on again. wiiKey should
now have recovered its firmware, and EEPROM will be restored to
default settings.

hope it helps you, but then theres no guarantee that your wii will read it either. Good Luck
Theres no way to reverse your firmware, this same thing happened to me, i took it back and they replaced the chip for me because no back-ups was working, this is when i updated to 3.0e, so check it all out but the only solution i have is take it back to where you got it done, for me i have a lifetime warranty.
