OK, you need to provide a lot more information then that.
1. what are the network settings on the PC your plugging into
2. what are the network settings on the 360
3. what type of ethernet cord do you use (strait through or crossover)
4. why not plug directly into the router or get a wireless gaming adapter that is Xbox Live compatible?
5. have you enabled network sharing on the laptop and main connection?

and so on. The more infor you provide the better the help will be.

Well to be perfectly honest it would be better just to get a good wireless gaming adapter that is Xbox Live compatible. Especially if the router is under 60 feet from your 360. If it is 50-60 feet away it can cause some lock ups or drop of connection when using wireless signals.

I have never done it through a laptop but i would assume that you would need to set your 360 up with the laptops connection settings. And if your have security enabled on the router, which any wireless network should, then you need they SSID name, type of encryption (WEP/WPA), and the key.
