A friend of mine is giving me his 360 because he said it stopped working and doesnt have the patience to figure out how to fix it. I on the other hand do, even though I am new to it. What he says it is doing is it will boot up to the main menu screens - but whenever a disc is put in <game, whatever> it just sits there, and it doesnt even spin. To me it just sounds like the drive zonked out and replacng the drive could possibly fix the problem - does this sound right to everyone or am I way off? I would appreciate your input. Thanks!!!

if he console is flashed i would see if he has the original firmware dump. You will need that to program a new drive for the 360. you might be able to get it yourself depending on the amount of damage to the drive

Yeah, the drive would be my first thought but it could of course be other things. Most drives go bad a little more slowly.
For example when the laser wears down it slowly starts having trouble reading discs. Or if it burns out it will still spin but not read any discs.
So the drive not spinning at all has me worried

lmao if this is a good friend tell him to send it back to M$ if your greedy take it for yourself and send it to M$.

Open the console take the dvd drive out. Unscrew the 4 or 6 screws on the bottom of the dvd drive. Take the bottom panel off. lift the top panel off. Hook the drive back up to the 360 leaving the case off. Put a game in if the disc doesnt spin at all you need a disc spindle motor. If thats the case Check xboxscene.com BST forum. You might be able to find a parts drive or a bricked one for cheap.

dude even better... if it is th reg version of the xbox ( gray one ) the drive is loud as hell so u will KNOW if the dvd spins or not, so theres really no need to open it to check now that u know it aint spining, so look here this happened to my friend and what we did was that we got a 29 dollars dvd player and replace the dvd spin motor, easy work but u gotta be careful with the wires and remember to leave the original lazer on the drive, another thing that could be wrong ( as in my case ) is that the cd is not spining cuz of the top holder, this means the motor spins but the thing at the top cover got stuck or poped out a little bit and is not holding the dvd down anymore, can also be switched and simply fixed deppending on how bad it is. with all that sed, the last option since is obviously the drive... just go to the cd burning forums for 360 and read the post see if u find a LG drive with the hacked firmware and not only u gon fix the problem but u will also be able to play copys :p

Thanks for the input.. I will see what I can do when it gets here - its from my wifes brother who is in the military and he is in Okanowa, Japan.. he already got a replacement.. the one he is sending me is already moded so it reads (or did read) backed up games.. I dont know much about doing all of this at all - so I guess it will be a learning experience. p.s. I did pay him for it :) Im not that bad!
