Compressing with Virtual Dub

It may seem ridiculous, but I haven't yet learned how to compress a large AVI file, captured directly as a DV file, onto a much smaller file.

Can someone take through the steps to get there?

Generally, load the AVI file.
Click 'Video' 'Full processing Mode' 'Compression' then select the preferred video compressor.
Click 'Audio' 'Full processing Mode' 'Compression' then select the preferred audio compressor.

Examples for video:

XVid Codec
http://www.xvid.org/

Free DivX codec
http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/download/

Example for audio:
Lame MP3 codec
http://users.tpg.com.au/mtam/install_lame.htm
