Forget about motherboard changing, ever heard of the Pandora battery?
It can unbrick a PSP, and it can be made with any 1.50/CFW PSP (You'd have to buy one ready made).
All downgraders and upgraders carry a small chance of bricking, downgrade, and only worry about it if you DO brick.
PSP, all the way from 1.00 to 5.50 GEN D2 - DS Lite w/ M3DS Real (M3 Sakura v1.34)
PS3 3.01 - iPod Touch 2G 16GB Jailbroken - Xbox 360 60GB - PC, Q6600, 3GB DDR2, GTX260 (216) 896MB

Anything that alters flash0... firmware/system files.
There are some things that are clear cut, eg: You do this you'll brick, you do this you're fine. Things like downgraders are less defined, eg: You do this and it should be fine, but it might not be.

You need to find out what motherboard he has. You can do this by opening up the UMD bay and looking in the top right hand corner inside the UMD Bay. If there is text then it is a TA-82 or higher motherboard. If there isn't then you don't have a TA-82 Mobo.

Find out what motherboard he has and use the corresponding 2.80 downgrader GUIDE.
