this has probably been asked and mentioned many times before but just to be sure....

I just bought a 360 and it has a BenQ drive. Am I pretty much screwed when it comes to modding?

Check xboxscene forums if you buy a samsung drive you can swith out your benq but you have to know what your doin. Involves cutting traces on the benq drive to extract your motherboard key.
