dolby digital 5.1 only stereo (win xp)

hi folks, i've got a serious problem. i would like to play my games on my xp machine in dolby digital 5.1. i connected the computer via optical out with my home theater thingy from sony (optical in) so i did the same with my ps3 (connected via optical in too).

whenever i play on my ps3 the home theater shows me dolby digital on the display and i've got the sound and effects through the right speakers #(front, rear, center and so on) but when i start playing on my xp (bioshock for example) i only get stereo sound (it even shows stereo plus subwoofer on the display of my home theater). i've got soundmax on my xp and i turned on 5.1 i turned also 5.1 in bioshock and nothing helps. the soundcard drivers are correctly installed.

does anyone has a solution for my problem?
