Viewing PC Desktop on 42" LCD TV

I have a question about viewing my laptop on my LCD tv and a way to resolve the problem.
I connected my laptop (XP) to my tv via s-video cable and I can view
everything except for when I play a .asf video using windows media player. (I can view the desktop, surf the net, play pc games etc.)

I can see the player on the tv, I just cant see the content, I just
have a black box, the content is visible though & running on the laptop. Any suggestons? Does the windows media player have to be configured somehow, does it play the content that a tv cant read, such as that recorded .asf stream? Thanks for any
help.
