Hi guys! Im new here, so please kidnly bear with me. I just have a simple question which is no doubt redundant here, I tried searching, but the answers were laconic and rather confusing when it came to application. So basically, how do I transfer DVD movies to harddrive so I can watch it in the computer without needing the DVD? I dont have any interest on copying DVD to DVD or VCD or DIVX, just copying it into the hardrive. Thanks a lot.

p.s. transfer to harddrive preferrably without wasting too much memory like 7 gigs a disk or something. is there like 1 or 2 steps easy process without hassle of 5 or 6 debugging programs involved?

Thanks!

You can use DVD Decrypter to make a ISO of the dvd to HDD.But will make a exactly copy of the dvd.Or u can use DVD Decrypter w/ IFO mode. And then just copy the Movie files without the extras.

Use CloneDVD to copy the DVD. When you get to the Select Output screen, click on the ISO/UDF button and then Clone will create an ISO around 4.4GB big.

Now get Nero Image Drive or Demon tools and make a virtual drive. Mount the ISO and then you can play it in PowerDVD or other.

Good Luck :D

PS, you will need AnyDVD to decrypt the DVD so that CloneDVD can read it!

thank u, but cloneDVD is limited to 1 gigs on trial version. but i already found a way with DVD Shrink. However, it seems to take hours, even though I have a pretty fast computer, just got it 3 months ago. Ironically, on the guide it says it should take 20-60 mins.

You can use DVD Shrink to rip and compress in one step. You can set the compression to however you want it from no compression to any variable amount that you want using the ratio slider. Best of all, DVD Shrink is free.

check out oriphus' site or the DVD Shrink site:

jbonew,
start new threads for new issues. It works better. You don't need anydvd with decrypter. Anydvd is a background driver program that will let you rip(decrypt) dvds. Decrypter is a ripping program also.

What you want to do is to save a step in making multiple backups ;) and you currently use xcopy platinum.

What I would recommend is using:
1. DVD Shrink-- it will rip and compress to fit a dvd9 to the size specified and it is free.

2. Burning program-- The most often recommended programs are Nero and recordnow. You can get trial of both of these-- they will cost a little after the trial is done to register them.

Check out oriphus' site or the DVD Shrink page:
check out Oriphus site and use his settings--data mode.

As I recall, I think CloneDVD limits to 1 gigs on trial version. But ya, DVD Shrink seems great so far with its decoding and compressing abilities. My only resentments are it takes way too long, hours upon hours, especially if you're encoding something like 4 gigs. However DVD2One is the fastest, 20 mins or so, but it's limited to 30% of movie, so sux too.

2 Koola: the url u sent on my PM still assimilates error, wrong page maybe?

Thanks!

you need to check out your system. With no compression, DVD Shrink or decrypter will rip a disc in about 20-30 minutes for me. Adding compression will increase the time to about 40-50 min for me. Deep analysis will add about 30-40 minutes. You don't need deep analysis unless you are compressing alot (?more than 40%)--who knows if you need it if you are watching movies on your computer.

dvd2one is limited in the trial version only. $40 for the full version.

Well DVD Decrypter does take 20 mins or so, no prob with that. But Shrink takes me really long, hours(s), and yes I do add compression, because I try to convert DVD-9 to hardrive or size of a DVD-5. But as I read the guide for the Shrink, it said it should take from 20-60 mins. But when compressing and encoding 6-7 gigs of stuff to 3-4, it takes me way longer than 60 mins. I dont know what's missing here, my cpu specs are pretty alright:

Sony Vaio Laptop XP 2.6 Ghz Pentium 4
Internal DVD/DVD-R/DVD-RW, DVD-ROM read speed is probably 8x.

If I rip it with Decrypter then use Shrink to compress, do you think it will be shorter than using Shrink to rip diectly from the DVD and compress at the same time? Problem is, I tried ripping it with Decrypter, but when I attempted to open the .vob file on Shrink, it gives me an error and wont open. But then again, instead of the whole DVD, I decrypted one movie, (it's an episode collection).

Thanks!

how much ram do you have? How much hard drive space do you have? (You should not be clicking the analysis button when you backup)

You can use decrypter and then shrink. Use decrypter in file mode, and then when you open shrink, use open file, and find the ifo file not the VOB. If you decrypt the whole movie, it is a video_ts.ifo. I have not tried it with decrypter movie only. That might be shorter to do it that way. But if you are doing a multiepisode disc, the episodes are probably not too big in all.

256 SDRAM, 37 gigs.

The analysis doesnt take me too long, and I think it's worth doing even if it improves a little of the resolutions, so if I am encoding, depending on the size, I include it. The eps are about 25 mins worth each, 7-8 eps in a disc, about 7.5 gigs in total in the DVD. Yeah, I can compress the size to about 350 mb per eps to store it on the harddrive. But now I was thinking of instead burning it in DVD, compressing 7.5 gigs to 4.2 gigs. Here is where the problem is, compressing that takes hours from the DVD, dunno if it's shorter using the Decrypter. I think just getting one episode out of the DVD, which is around 350-480 mb takes 8-10 mins without deep analyzing. I got no complaints regarding whether it works or not, but considering taking hours, I wonder about the time and what if the computer freezes, and then have to start all over again.

However, if I seperate eps and decrypt it one by one, like 350-480 mb each, and then burn it on the DVD, will I be able to play it? Or it only works if you decrypt all the eps together like a movie and then burn it?

Thanks!
