I searched the other threads talking about this, and I went to this link 'http://cd-rw.org/articles/archive/aspisetup.cfm ' and did what it said and all but it didn't help me... I really don't think there is another thread spacifically like mine, sorry if there is.
Okay so here is my problem... My CD-RW drive won't burn half the time, and won't recognize cd's I put into it half the time. I have a 500s Gateway with a DVD-ROM and CD-RW. I have Windows XP. Now I have yet to talk to the Gateway tech people about the burning problem.... But well, I hope I am not confusing.
Here I go.. I was trying to restore my PC or as they say 'return my hard drive to zeros' or something..., there are 4 discs you have to go through to restore it, I put in the first one, the 'Drivers' CD, I restart the PC, then go to 'boot from cd' It goes to this black screen with white words... it goes up the screen for a while then slows down and stops... and I get and error, and it won't let me restore my PC.
I have contacted Gateway 3 different time about this problem and first they gave me the wrong thing to do, then they were like 'since I am having no other problems with my PC why restore it?' (This is before the burning problem happend much btw... I didn't say anything to them about it.) So now I can at least contact them a FOURTH time and perhaphs they will tell me what in the world to do finally...
But before I mess with them again, I am getting really tired of it, I thought maybe someone else could perhaphs help me...
But anyways, back to the error.... This is what the screen says.... it says this stuff then I just have to return to windows and I can't restore...
"PCI bus scan complete.
Scanning PCI bus using BIOS interfaces...
Scanning PCI bus using Mechanism #1...
Scanning PCI bus using Mechanism #2...
Unable to find AIC.789x
ASPI8U2.SYS is not installed
ASPI CD-ROM Driver for DOS

MSCDEX Version 2.25
CopyRight Microsoft Corp. 86095
Drive D:= Driver 0EMCDOO1 unit0
Drive E:= Driver 0EMCDOO1 unit1
Label not found"
I know this is alot of stuff... but I figured I'd just ask... thanks.
{edit}
Well I searched on the net for ' AIC.789x ' and I am guessing it some sort of chip or something? That has something to do with PCI and SCSI things.... I went into my Gateway Utilities, PC Doctor thing, and tried to run a SCSI test and it told me it could not run because 'no SCSI devices found'. I ran a PCI test and it passed it.
{edit2} I ran the ASPI check and it tells me
'ASPI is properly installed and is fully operational. A total of 2 host adapters have been detected.'
Ugh.. I dunno.
{edit3}
I ran a USB test, it failed, it said..
Child device not installed. _EVENT:pcdrusb_3
I dunno if that has anything to do with it..
I think this is just turning into a complicated mess! Maybe I will just call Gateway instead of buggin you people with my confusing rambling, lol.

You wan't to insert the restore disc named "OS\WindowsXP" which is probably disc 2 m8. Be sure that you insert the "proper" restore disc in the DVD-ROM and not your cd burner when formatting& restoring your hard drive.Make sure all your external hardware (printer, scanner, so forth) is plugged in when restoring OS. Once you've figured this out and have completed this process, now insert your restore disc labeled "driver disc". Install all drivers nd you should be good to go. After you've completed this task, download a free buring application called burnatonce and burn some data (or music) and see if you still encounter the same errors.

Yes I am finding a lot of the time it does say this even though it is not true. ASPI is only installed correctly if all the version numbers match up. If not then ASPI is not correctly installed.

Thanks. =)
Yes! All is working well, other than, well its weird. Cause I can burn stuff fine with the burnatonce thing & with Nero. Music I can burn fine using roxio.. But if I try to burn data using roxio, a large amount of data, towards the end, when its about done.. I get an error thing, and its all "error.. blah blah forgot... the disc may not be usable." And it screws up the disc..
But I am not going to worry about it, cause burnatounce & nero do just fine copying things. =)
UGH! I am so glad all this stuff is fixed, thanks again!!! =)
