I was flipping through an old Computer Shopper mag (Feb '03) and ran across Yamaha's watermarking of CDs/DVDs:

http://www.yamahamultimedia.com/yec/tech/discta2_01.asp#

"DiscT@2 is an exclusive Yamaha feature that allows text and images to be drawn on the unused portion of a CD-R disc. You can now etch a memo, your signature, photo thumbnails or your company's logo right onto the bottom of the disc."

Basically, it's a $150 software package that allows your existing burner to write on the data side of the disc and it doesn't affect your data (although it does cut into your disc storage MBs). I thought it was cool, and you don't even need to buy additional labels.

Thermal is much cheaper and produces better photo quality results. This method will probs screw up your DVD Writer lol!

I have a Yamaha CRW-F1 that uses the Disc T@2. It works pretty good on dark dyes, but is barely visible on silver discs. As you stated, the big drawback is that you have to leave quite a bit of space empty for the label to be easily readable which is why I used the feature only a few times, then never again.

I like Sharpies!

Check out the Epson Stylus Photo 900 & 960. They offer inkjet printing to DVD/CD and are amazing. I has problems with labels making my playback unstable and bought this printer. It is incredible. Although the media is a bit more expensice, it is worth it!

Get the new Epson Stylus R300 not the 900. The 900 loads from the back (pain) but the R300 from the front. Prints on the printable disks of course. Its brand new. And yes the disks are little bit more but it is worth it.

Loading from the back is not a big deal. It does require a bit more space behind the printer when deciding where to put it on your desk. I am very happy with the 900.
