I backed up DVD, seemingly everything okay. Go to burn with Alcohol 120%; then it says "you must manually set track and byte speed." I have tried every possible combination with this before and get nowhere. So I just continue on past this - insert blank DVD into burner and get error "Empty DVD". Of course, it is empty! Can't burn on to "full" DVD. What do I need to do to burn this file? Thank you.

Try using ImgBurn to burn the dvd. It's a good free burner.
If this is an iso use the write mode - if it's not use the build mode to add the files or video_ts folder to burn.
When you open ImgBurn press 'L' on the keyboard to get a log. Any problems and you can post this log for us to look at.

I did try IMGburn and it said (not a quote - I don't recall exactly) but the music came on and it said "successfully completed" or something.
I chose a file from my F drive which is ISO, to the D drive, which is where the burner is. This has happened before with IMG burn by the way.... I tried with the box in the lower left corner checked "test", "verify" and neither box checked.
It is in the "write" mode and I use Verbatim 16X -R blank DVD's.
Here is the log:
I 10:13:00 ImgBurn Version 2.3.2.0 started!
I 10:13:00 Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600)
I 10:13:00 Total Physical Memory: 522,764 KB - Available: 210,800 KB
I 10:13:00 Initialising SPTI...
I 10:13:00 Searching for SCSI / ATAPI devices...
I 10:13:00 Found 1 DVD-ROM and 1 DVD±RW!
I should also let you know that I couldn't burn this with Alcohol 120% because you had to "manually set the byte and track modes" or did I say that already?
THANKS

Ok so the burn w/ ImgBurn was successful?
Do you have a blank in the drive when trying to pick test(simulation burn option) or verify?
Sorry I should have clarified the log w/ ImgBurn - pressing L defaults ImgBurn to save a log every time you burn - this log is just the beginning - the rest of the log that can be useful is when ImgBurn actually starts burning.

Of course I had a blank DVD in the burner! :)
Just so we don't go back and forth forever, I should open IMG burn, hit Ctrl+L and then go through the steps to burn the disk?
Yes, IMG burn said it was successful, but when I insert the "burned" disk into my Panasonic DVD player/burner, it reads as "ready to record" which would mean empty, nothing was burned on it.

yeah sorry for the confusion :) One of those mornings - guess I haven't had enuf coffee :)
Using the latest ImgBurn from April - 2.3.2.0?
Try and go thru the motions of burning - hopefully you'll be able to check the test box to do a simulation.
Also what software did you use to rip it?
Try playing that 'succussful' one back in the pc and see if it plays.

Here is the whole log - I tried playing the burned disk with VLC media player (which works almost all the time when I burn disks with Alcohol 120%) and oddly it said in the heading "audio CD-Track 1" ???
Needless to say, I'm saying it didn't play.
Original file backed up with DVD Shrink. Any ideas?

Here's a few more suggestions:
Try playing the iso from the pc - just to make sure all okay there.
Update the firmware on the drive - the latest is - TS11
This burn took 30 mins at an average write speed of 1.1x even though you had it set to max. So check & make sure all drives are in DMA mode and not PIO mode - guide.
Open ImgBurn and go to Tools>settings. Click on 'defaults'.
Set the burn speed to 8x instead of max.

I am going to do what you suggest with the exception of TS11. I don't even know what firmware is and when I opened the link it said for advanced users only and one could ruin the drive permanently if installed improperly or something to that effect!
A major question - what is IMG burn doing when it says "successfully completed" and yet the DVD disk is completely blank?
THANKS

Firmware is like the o/s of the drive - one thing updates do is add more support more the different media. Usually best to keep it up to date cause sometimes it also has fixes and/or enhancements along w/ updating support for media.
You can also use Samsung site - the latest is actually TS12 - they have a live update program you can run - link.
The problem could be media and/or firmware not up to date on why it's not playing.
But you have this in the log which is throwing me - 11:27:06 Source File Sectors: 1,355,973 (MODE1/2048)
I 11:27:06 Source File Size: 2,777,032,704 bytes
I 11:27:06 Source File File System(s): None
I don't have a imgburn log of mine handy but usually it says something like iso/udf here. Part of the reason I said to check the iso on the pc and click on default settings in ImgBurn.

I did play the ISO on the PC, it is all there; shouldn't have assumed you knew I did that!
All the device managers were pointed to DMA
Change default settings on IMGBurn and change burn speed to 8x.
We're making progress - sort of - now I get an error on my Panasonic player/burner "U11"! But still no picture! I give up!
PS I don't know what 0/S is either, but thanks for your attempts.

Is this the only one this happens to - all other dvd's you backed up ok?
My thinking is it's something with the file system either when it was ripped or burned. Setting the defaults in ImgBurn would have taken care of that if it was during the burn process. Ripping an iso with Shrink though doesn't really have any options to change. Now using program like decrypter has a few setting you could change.
Oh and o/s is just operating system.
I think the best bet and probably easiest is just to re rip this one again. Just save to a hard disc folder instead then use the build mode to add and burn the files in ImgBurn.
edit: typos :)
