Hi there, recently I have just got myself into the world of PSP homebrewing. Its probably been a month now and its been fun.
However, I'm having little difficulties deciding whether to upgrade to the latest firmware or not.
Firstly I would like to say is, what attracts me to upgrade is because apparently the latest CFW (3.71 M33 WITH the 1.5 kernel) allows certain PSX games to work and not glitch now (my selection is Final Fantasy 8). I read this is true, but however, is there a way around it so FF8 could work without updating to 3.71 cfw?
Also I have been reading through that the latest firmware is finally fully working etc, since the kernel has been released.
But what does the kernel actually have to do with the cfw to work fully?
Also, I read up that apparently some games that allow you to go online doesn't work. Is this true and has this been solved?
And does the new kernel 1.5 patch allow 3.71 to FULLY homebrew (as in most emulators will work).
I read that people prefer to use the older cfw over the newer one because there isn't much of a difference and the only thing that IS different is custom themes. So is it worth homebrewing?
What should I do? Personally, I wanna play Final Fantasy 8 on my PSP (with no glitches etc), but I don't want to go and do that when other functions of PSP homebrewing don't work!
If I do, can I downgrade back again? My PSP is the 1003 series (black phat), not TA-082 mobo and currently using 3.52 M33-4.
I hope my questions are answered and also discussed. Anymore questions, I will be posting it on this thread.
Thank you greatly, I am indeed a PSP homebrewing NOOB.

i wouldnt call urself a noob first of all...u no wut ur doing sorta u just need a lil advice. ok here is my personal opinion and thought. i would upgrade to 3.71 M33 if i were you... tbh i really dont think you, personaly would lose anything by upgrading to this firmare. you like games and psx eboots and it can deliver that. u like themes it can deliver that too (not as well)...
now the thing why not to upgrade is the .prx plugins do not work... and the theme customization ONLY works via xmb. sony changed alot of the flash0 files so its no good setting themes like we did the way before. i'd never heard about FF8 not working on 3.52 M33-4 ... if it doesnt work well try the universal popsloader my Team M33.
yeah the 1.50 patch give u full homebrew acces.
Conclusion: if u upgrade to 3.71 M33 u will have a sorta better looking firmware, play the newest games and eboots. the downside is that you cannot use most prx's and u cann0ot customize as much... so it basicaly loses half of the concept of custom firmware
Homebrew's fun, aint it? :)

I still think 3.71 falls short when it comes to running custom XMB. Plus it lacks compatibility for allot of the current plugins.
So I would recommend sticking with 3.52 M33-4 and try using the popsloader plugin for PSX game compatibility. It allows you to choose between 3.00 - 3.52 versions. This comes in handy when playing a PSX game that the 3.52 version might have issues running. You can choose a different pops version to load the PSX game which could play the PSX game better then the original 3.52 kernel.
You can get the plugin HERE.
Extract the file and drag the seplugins folder into the root of your Memory Stick.
Now go into recovery menu and enable the popsloader plugin under plugins. Then when you start a PSX game the pops menu will come up for you to choose a version. If you ever start a pops version and it doesn't load the PSX game hold the R shoulder button down while booting the PSX game again for the pops menu to come back up to try another version.
Just so you know this will not work on 3.71 M33 firmware.

I found 3.71 M33 to be extremely unstable. I updated to it and started getting a BSOD over and over again, then found out you can't just recover the normal way. I had to make another Pandora's battery with my friends PSP to get back to 3.52 M33-4.

You could have used the application linked HERE to recover back to 1.50 from 3.71 M33.

*sigh* I just tried the whole popstation thing, though I think the main problem I'm really having is the fact that my FFVIII is actually PAL version and not NTSC.
Either way, back to the topic, so I take it unless I choose to further advance homebrewing (i.e. use many different other applications on the psp) then upgrading wouldn't be as bad since I will be only using it to play PSP games (ISO's and CSO's) and PSX EBOOTS?
Otherwise, its best not to upgrade it?

There will be no advancing in homebrew, dude. Fewer homebrew apps/games work on 3.71. If anything, you'll be losing compatability.

yeah i guess he is right. tbh you wouldnt lose anything big by upfgrading if ur concern is psx/psp games and custom theme and homebrew... u only lose alot of prx ability and a so called buggy firmware.
