Rip with DVDFab HD Decrypter, compress with DVD Shrink and burn with Imgburn.

LOCOENG probably pointed out the best freeware system of doing a backup. The most important part of the backup is getting good decrypted and cleaned files to work with that have compliant structure. You'll sometimes hear that process called the "rip". Once the rip is completed, a large number of free and retail programs can be used to transcode and burn. With a good rip, most decent programs can transcode. Some programs will do the entire task, such as DVDFab Platinum. Then there are programs that just transcode and burn, such as Recode (Nero), and DVDCopy5 (InterVideo). Until Shrink's decryption ware became obsolete, it was full function (except for burning). It always needed a burner to complete the task. Now Shrink is used for editing and transcoding. ImgBurn, Nero, and CopyToDVD are a few of the more popular burners and the last 2 are supported by Shrink.
