SD card for backups

I have looked through the afterdawn forums, and searched google, but have not been able to come across the info that I need.
Here is what I am thinking. I had a modded PS2 DVD drive die on me a while back and don't want my Wii to fall to the same fate.
However, knowing that drives DO die (and it seems that they are more prone to this when the system has been modded) I want to figure out if I could be playing games from an SD card. I have a Wiikey installed, and it runs my burned DVDs beautifully (depending on media brand).
If it is possible, what is the process for playing Wii games off of an SD card? I would assume that you would need at least an 8GB SD card, but other than that, I am at a bit of a loss.
I have read about a Gecko something or other, but no single site goes into detail on how this device works.

I want to know this too. Some genius better roll in here and break this down, because I'm just as backup-illiterate as the next new guy. The SD card sounds like a freaking brilliant idea though.

I am pretty sure you cannot mod it that way to play backups. I believe it has been said on the forums before that the only way to do it, right now atleast, is with a mod chip installed. Sorry guys

guessswho: Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately, since you didn't read my original post, it is entirely worthless. If you could kindly re-read (read, NOT skim) my post, you would see that I have a wiikey installed. I have the ability to play backups written to DVD.
I however am interested in getting games to run off of an SD card. I would assume that the Wiikey would need some sort of update to allow it to force a load from the SD card slot. If this is possible now, I would like to know how it is done. Otherwise, I am looking for information on whether this ability will come to fruition in the future.

Honestly I think it's hella possible, you just need to get someone with programming skills to rewrite where it seeks the loading data. It should be little more than a matter similar to rewiring like... a lightswitch-
OH HAY HALO COMMERCIAL, BRB.

You'd obviously need an SD card that's atleast 4.5gb+ which would be probably 8gb which aren't super cheap, i guess there not too expensive (ebay). Also i think i read somewhere that the wii only reads SD cards that are 2gb or less so theres gotta be a mod for that one.
I think (I THINK) i read a post about reading wii games off sd cards though and you need like 512mb-1gb or above because you'd have to make multiple transfers for one game but i don't know where the data goes after that because the wii doesnt have internal storage device... when i have time i'll do a little research and keep you guys posted.

slibs: You wouldn't happen to be a Dragon Quest fan, would you?
Yeah, as I mentioned in my first post, you would need an 8gb card. I too remember reading that the Wii only accepts up to 2 gig cards too. That could be something that even Nintendo updates in the future though. In fact, I bet they do, possibly even by the next update. As for internal storage, how do you think that you save your games on the Wii? On the internal flash drive!! The Wii comes set up with 512 megs of flash memory. Otherwise you would need a memory card to save your games, Miis, etc...

Being that Wii games are around 4 gigs, yeah, I would say that 512 megs wouldn't be enough to hold a full game. I was merely stating that the Wii does in fact have an internal storage device, in the form of flash memory.

Right. It doesn't have a hard drive. I see the lack of a hard drive and a blessing and a curse wrapped into one. The blessing is that flash lasts longer and is more dependable than a hard drive. The curse is that it has really low storage capabilities compared to a hard drive.

In order to even consider playing a game from a SD card, there would have to be wii homebrew first...

thought it was self explanatory... to get a function out of the wii that it was not intended to have, you would need to get a better mod than the one currently being used.

like I said from the beginning, the only way to backup games currently is with a mod chip. EVEN THOUGH you do have the mod chip, the wii cannot play a backed up game based off of a SD card. Unless you want to program something which will allow it, use the mod chip, the lg drive, and simply make backups
