Hi there

Well ive spent a long time today trying to understand the issues regarding a modded wii and think i now finally have my head around it!!

My wii is semi-bricked as settings are unaccesible.Im in the uk - so dont update online as firmware would be incorrect.

Its a japanese wii, and since i played mario striker only some of my games work. All of the games were bought in malaysia so ill leave you to your own conclusions on their originality. They say NTSC but doesnt specify U or J.

I am assuming some are U and some are J as 7 out of the 10 work ok.

I have read that mario striker has a firmware update on it, 2.1 or 2.2 i think.

With my wii being JP, i think mario must have been NTSC U and dumped the 2.1/2.2U firmware on it - didnt see any messages about it but could have been in japanese and i didnt understand.

As i understand, if i can get my firmware back to Japanese, this technically should resolve the problem as the wii will be in harmony as a japanese machine and will have the latest firmware (J) on it and any new games wont update the system, from any region.

I have been told that Big Brain acadamy (J) has 3.0J - can anyone clarify this and have they had similar problems to me?

I have also ordered Madden 08 and tiger woods 08 from USA, does anyone know if these have any firmware updates on them, if so I'll wait to resolve before playing them.

I hope someone can help clarify my situation

Thanks

Latest firmware for Japanese Consoles is 2.2J and just to let you know the Big brain academy name for japan is "Wii de Yawaraka Atama Juku" so if you can find it i'd suggest you run it on your console.

Im sure you have already read this:

thanks for the info

the link that you kindly attached says that the latest firmware update for Japan is 3.0J? Is there a definative answer to this?

"Click on the Wii symbol in the bottom left hand corner. Go to Wii settings. The firmware version is in the top right hand corner. (3.0U = USA/3.0E = Europe/3.0J = Japan)"

Also, the question i was trying to ask was that if the firmware has been accidently changed to non JP (ie to US) on a JP Wii, will converting it back to the latest JP firmware remove the semi-brick from my machine and are there any known difficulties with crossed firmwares and changing back to what it should be?

can anwone also clarify that it is ok to connect my JP Wii to the internet in the UK - i have been told the following re firmware updates:

"The update doesnt specify from your location, it specifies to the wii console, so even if your in the UK and you own a Jap Wii if you update online it will do the Jap firmware, though the update button is in the settings menu."

Why, therefore, would you not always want to connect to the internet and keep your Wii up to date - some people suggest not to update the firmware as this may brick the machine

Oh - so many questions im confusing myself! please please help me as im new to all of this!

I wanted the mod chip so that i could buy original games wherever i was in the world - ie my wii is multi region.

Can the language be changed on a JP Wii to english or is this just not possible?

I have also ordered Madden 08 and tiger woods 08 from USA, does anyone know if these have any firmware updates on them, if so I'll wait to resolve before playing them.

Seeing as i've never semi-bricked i can't tell you that it will work 100% but it has worked in alot of cases. Updating the Wii to the latest firmware will stop the older updates from appearing when you get into a game but the newer ones though it says 3.0J and say you have 3.0U firmware on your wii, it really is 3.0b-J but seen only as 3.0J so you think ok i'll update no harm, that little effect can semi-brick or even fully brick your wii, you SHOULD always have the latest firmware via INTERNET and never rely on games for updates unless your in a bricking sitch.

With your crossed firmware issue, you cant get into update because it is in settings and i suggest that you get yourself metroid prime 3 jap or something new to unbrick it before you update. Though technically seeing as it is a new game your wii should then be updated.

thanks for this

so i must keep my wii connected to the internet for all the latest firmware updates?

will it always download the correct firmware - ie the japanese one even though im in the uk?

I dont know why some people say to avoid at all costs connecting a modded wii to the internet? why would they say this?

also - any ideas on changing the language - is this possible?
