Dear Smart People,

I have an older PS2 (SCPH-30001), and I generally use SwapMagic on it to play my, erm, backups. I've had it for about two years now, and when i started using SwapMagic about a year ago, it would stay stuck on the "Browser/Config" screen for quite a while (up to a minute or so) before SwapMagic loaded. That didn't really bother me, though, as I often played my games for many hours at a time without turning it off.

Earlier today, I was playing Xenosaga Episode 1, and I noticed that it was taking REALLY long to load from one scene to the next. So, I figure maybe it's because the unit's been on for a while. I get to a save point ant power off. About an hour later, I turn it back on, load my SwapMagic....

....and stare at the Browser/Config screen for about twenty minutes. (Okay, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the idea.) Anyways, I look up stuff on the Internet, ask advice in IRC, and I always get "clean the laser!" So I clean the lens, try to reload, and still nothing.

While my cover is off, I notice two things that may or may not have signifigance. First is that the red laser -does- come on for a very short period (less than half a second), and that the disc spins about 10 or 20 degrees, then stops.

Has anyone had this problem, and can it be fixed short of getting a new PS2? I'm not opposed to spending a LITTLE bit of cash, but if it can be done for free, I'd much rather do it that way.

So, my laser probably -is- working, or at least attempting to work, but for some reason my discs are not spinning...

Those of you that have had similar problems, was it just the spindle motor that needs to be replaced?

Have you tried this yet also on your PS2. It will help for awhile sometimes. You would probably just need to adjust the lens angle before I would try the laser pots adjustment.

I would say that you've nearly fried your laser, most probably from low quality backups.

What blank DVD's do you use?
