Hi there,
Its been awhile since ive had to ask a question or get help in here. The las few days ive noticed Dvd shrink acting strange when I try to use it and im not sure why. WHen it starts shrinking it usually shows the movie as it is shrinking in the little window, but its been dragging and taking forever to get started for some reason. I thought it was just 1 movie then I tried a different movie and got the same thing. Anyone know why it would be dragging?
I have now uninstalled it and thought I would try a new D/L of Dvd Shrink but when I do that its in a zip file and I don't have winzip, are there any versions of Dvd Shrink that are not in a zip file? If not anyone know of another zip program I can use to unsip Dvd Shrink?
Thanks for the help in advance, I hope this is not confusing for anyone.

You can use WinRAR to unzip the file - shareware program has a 40 day trial I think. Or there's 7-Zip that's free.
The slowness sounds like your drive(s) may be in PIO mode. Check and get them back in DMA mode - guide

Hi there,
Ok in doing what you suggested here is what I found:
In Primary
Device 1
Device Type: Auto Detection
Transfer Mode: Dma is available
Current Transfer Mode: Not Applicable
Secondary
Device 1:
Device Type:DMA if Available
Current Transfer Mode:Multiword Dma Mode 2
I hope this helps in telling me what I should do. Also, How does it change on its own?
Thank You

How about what's showing for device 0?
The drive can revert down to pio mode when it's hits read errors from a disc.

Ok looks fine but go ahead and uninstall the secondary ide channel reboot and let windows reinstall. Can't hurt.
Have you tried reading the dvd(s) from the 2nd drive - if you haven't try that and see you the speed is with that.

Hi there,
WIll it hurt my pc to un install the secondary? And why is this necessary? ALso, you mentioned using my other drive, I only have 1 dvd drive and 1 cd drive on my pc.
Thanks

No it won't hurt the pc at all. Follow the guide - once you reboot Windows picks this controller up again and reinstalls.
Not always but sometimes Windows doesn't report DMA correctly.
I hoping the other drive was maybe a dvd -rom drive at least (reads dvds) that you try to see if the issue was just the one drive.
How long does it now take you to back up a movie?

I'll have to wait until Im home from work to un install the secondary, usually it doesn't take long to shrink a movie with Dvd shrink up until a few days ago when I noticed Dvd shrink acting strange when trying to use it.
Do I just follow the instructions above to un install the secondary? And will my pc automatically re-install it without me doing anything?
Thanks

Yes windows will detect & reinstall once you reboot.
Anything else acting up on the pc?
Have you also did a disc defrag, disc cleanup and virus scan very recently? If not I would do those also.
So shrink does finally finish - it just takes a lot longer now. No errors?

Yes I defragged/Disc cleanup and did virus scan yeaterday.
No, when my Dvd Shrink started acting strange, I took the movie out because it acted like it was going to take forever so I used another program to shrink it with but I like using Dvd Shrink better then anything.I didn't get any error message's etc. it was just acting unlike it usually does and I noticed it and posted on here.
Thanks

Ok if the other program didn't have the same dragging/slowness issue - probably not a drive dma problem.
Which other program did you use?
How about the dvd's that Shrink acted like this? Maybe a copy protection thing.

I used DvdFabDecryptor 1st then used a slysoft program can't remember the name lol. But DvdShrink hasnever done this before, the movies I was working on were Delta Farce & Plasterhead. I haven't tried using Dvd Shrink again since I encountered this problem. I did un-install it last night and re-installed it but i haven't tried using it yet since doing that.
Thanks

Ok - Delta Farce may be why Shrink was acting the way it was. I'm not sure what Plasterhead has on it but Delta Farce has Sony's latest protection and one symptom w/ Shrink may be what you describe. Sometimes it just errors out fast though.
DVDFab is still updated so it can handle these new ones.
After you rip w/ DVDFab (the latest) you should then be able to open those files in Shrink - Shrink should act normally then :)
Or use the slysoft product - you probably have CloneDVD.

Nope that is why I used clone dvd because dvd shrink acted the same way it did as described above. Im not really sure what I need to do to fix this issue? Do I need to do as you stated above or something different?
Thanks

With this new information :) (the movies your doing - though I'm not sure on Plasterhead cause I haven't backed up that one) I'm leaning more towards the copy protection. Usually ripping w/ the latest DVDFab takes care of it.
Sometimes though if it doesn't run the files through vobblanker or fixvts 1st then open them in Shrink.
If you still have one of these on your hard drive - try that and see how shrink acts. Both are free and take maybe 5-10 mins to run.
vobblanker guide & fixvts guide.
Or do you have another movie handy that Shrink has been successful with before that you can try? Just save it to the hard drive instead of burning if you like to save a disc.

Hi there,
Ok I just put my copy of Delta Farce that ive already shrunk into DvdShrink to try it out and it worked fine, But I also d/l a fresh copy of it because I un installed the last Dvd shrink I had on my pc when it started acting up. So maybe it was those 2 disc's, thats the very 1st time ive ever had a problem with Dvd shrink cause I use it for everything. Now I need to know were the settings are for Dvd shrink so I can make sure its set up right.
Thanks for the help, I will test it out this weekened to see how it acts and get back to you.
Thanks again

Not a problem 1Tizz
Sounds like it may have just been those 2 movies.
The default settings when installed should be fine - you can find them by going to edit>preferences.
Now if you wanted to change the quality settings after you do you next movie when you click on back up you'll find those settings in the quality setting tab.

1Tizz ... This is if you have 2 CD/DVD drives. Take your dvd-rom out of your computer and make the little jumper on it a slave drive. Make the other drive the master. Then it will run and burn faster.

It might - so give it a go and see. Just make sure you can the jumper pins on the back to match the setting on the ide cable - master to master and slave to slave connector.
If this is a Dell though they prefer cable select.
