Codec problems, as well with WMP problems..

Iv looked through some things on this site, and I couldnt find a relevent answer to my retarded problem. I have a bunch of movies on my computer, that before upgrading to vista worked just fine, Now All I can do i open them with Divx player Although I can convert them to DVD format, but I dont want them to be converted, I just want to play them. And I have recordings I made on this computer that im trying to make a presentation into, but the video editing software doesnt have the right codecs, my guess is they are all just using something that goes off of what WMP says, I have deleted all the codecs I could find reinstalled a AVI pack, and still nothing. I Cant rollback, or restore to a former point, and I have to delete my codecs by hand because they are not in the add/remove programs list, is there any way to solve this?
