As you can tell from the title I have the Hitachi-LG Rom v.79fl. Is there a flash/hack for this drive? I just got the HALO3 XBOX360 Edition. Please help me need a tutorial. Thanks to all that reply.

Right now the only thing you can do is buy a Samsung/older Hitachi and spoof it.

All the drives are flashable, including your 79, but there's only firmware to flash them with for the 78's and older.

The thing is to spoof it you still need to get the DVD key. Maximus Passkey is supposed to make it a bit more doable. Soldering is required and you'll have to get that epoxy off the firmware chip which is tough. If you could get the key off you could flash it since getting the drive into mode b is the problem. So you are most likely stuck ATM unless you can find a professional to flash it for you.

I google searched it and only found that I have to buy a mod chip and dont want to mess w/that. Is there anyway to tell what drive it is from the out side of the box. I had bought it from Target Store

http://www.360drives.com/list/page2?sort=lotno

Look at the lot number on the box. The list above is sorted by lot number and starts on the 2nd page, because some people didn't put the zero first in lot number like they should have.

I use to do alot of modchips for the PS2's, so I never considered the soldering to be a problem... and the 79/Benq would both need soldering. But for the majority of modders it's very risky and shouldn't be attempted.

The H3LE's only have the 79's and Benq's. You won't find one with an older drive.

I'm pretty sure you should be able to find an older drive Premium or Core in a store. I still see them in the stores all the time. You just have to make sure to check the lot number. Elites and the Halo 3 LE are the ones that will definitely have new drives in them.

If you are looking at the front of the box in it'll be on the left side. You can check it in store. The last time I bought a new 360 (after the banhammer in May) I called my wife to check the list against the lot number I saw in the store to make sure I got a Samsung drive which I did.

Yep. The team number and the lot number are on the cardboard box. There is a small flap by the bar code on the cardboard box which the cashiers open to scan the bar code on the 360. You can open that flap (it pops right open, you don't have to break anything) and you'll see the mfg. date on the 360.

All the columns on 360drives.com can be organized separately. Just click on the header on top. So for example you can go there and sort the premiums by lot number. Then just looks over and check out the team and mfg. date.
