i am trying to convert a movie which is in MP4 to divx. my dvd player cannot play mp4s. also i want to add a subtitle to it and the easiest way for me to do that is with a divx file. i have searched all over google and can't find a straight answer. all of the software i have tried is trail versions which leave a water mark or only convert 50%, is there a better program? i have tried also Dr.Divx but it says it need 20 hours to convert the file. any help?

I don't know of a free, one click solution, but it can be done.

I'm assuming that this is using the H.264 codec.
If you are familiar with VirtualDubMod, the file can be converted to XviD using a script - but there are two conditions.
Ffdshow has to be installed and 'VFW interface' selected in the installation program.
Then H.264 has to be enabled in the VFW configuration.

AVISynth must be installed and a script written in notepad thus:

directshowsource("C:\Documents and Settings\Superuser\Desktop\simpsons.mp4")

and saved as somename.avs

Run Virtualdub and load or drag the .avs file into the program.
You can now select the video and audio compression and save the file as an AVI.

I downloaded the Simpsons trailer [1280x544] 2:17 and it converted in 4:30, so it looks like a 2 to 1 time conversion for this particular format.
