While not the most accurate depiction of who/what the free mason society is all about a look at "National Treasure" the movie give a little history and insight.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's a "secret society", although there are certain things that are only known to Masons. Basically, Freemasonry is a fraternity, similiar to fraternities at universities. But let's be realistic, given the information-driven society we live in today, if you want to research Freemasonry, you can find information on the web, including it's origins and history. Basically, it's kept "secret" out of honor of the fraternity and it's history.

There are some secrets that are hard to find, no matter how hard you look. As far as becoming a Mason, it's a simple as asking somine you know who is a Mason. Traditionally, Masons do not recruit members, you must approach a mason and ask them for further direction.

All depends on what you consider "cool". Masons do a lot of public services, many of which you never hear of in the public. I personally do not regret being a member. But if you're in it for public recognition, you may find yourself disappointed at times.

Man you guys are real open about this! Last time I heard about it, it was all secret signs and stuff lol. Shows you what they teach in school.

the common line is... we are not a secret society, we are a society with secrets. There are many things we are free to talk about, it is, after all the largest fraternity in the world, not some cult like some people seem to think. Normally, you wouldn't (or shouldn't) have to ask someone verbally if they are a mason. I only did it this time due to the fact it's pretty hard to identify oneself as a mason on an internet chat forum.
