Hi, I've looked around but haven't found any information on doing what I want to try out. I have a modded V9 PS2 (fat one) with a network adapter. Now I was wondering if it's possible to make games load via the network adapter, backups that are either mounted on virtual drives or just plain old image files. I know something like this is possible with the GameCube, just not sure if it can be done with the PS2.

Sorry if it's been asked before, I couldn't find any concrete documentation on it, and I just wanted to make sure before I go out and get a HD and load them with HDLoader.

Thanks.

no. you cannot stream games onto the ps2.

you're on the right track with the hdd/hdloader combo. best way to go for any fat ps2, modchip or no modchip. but remember, hdloader only runs ps2 games. psx games will still be run from the cd. and remember to get a ide drive. sata is not compatable with the network adapter

best way to load ps2 games onto the hdd is through the computer. use a hd enclosure or connect directly to the computer, and use winhiip and dvd decrypter to rip and load games to the hdd.

Thanks for reminding me about the IDE. Thanks for the info. Confirmed my doubts. Didn't know about the no PSX games though. I just want to minimize the lens wear and tear.

Is it true that playing backups can damage a lens more than legit copies?

if you use quality media like verbatim and taiyo yuden, then the laser will go through normal wear and tear. any other media will stress out the laser by reading it more.

with your modded v9, you might be able to skip the laser, period. but it depends on what modchip you have. my v7 uses the memory card exploit, so it has to read the psx trigger disc. it's very minimum reading, but still uses the laser. if you have a chip that has internal memory, you should be able to boot hdloader off the chip.

It's some cheap ass chip. Neo12 I believe. My laser got really weak and I had my friend fiddle with it a bit. Now I want to avoid stressing it out.

So far I got the PS2 to play AVIs, SNES roms off an external HD. I was thinking about putting the backups on the external HD because I have one that I don't use anymore but I read somewhere it's USB 1.1 and isn't worth it.

yeah, external drives are slow on the ps2 due to the old usb1.1. the network adapter/hdd combo loads very fast. take gta:san andreas for example. long loading times on the cd. on the hdd, nearly gone. but i'm not sure on how to keep your avi and snes roms. hdloader reformats the hdd and can't be read normally on the computer; that's why winhiip is needed. other members might have a solution.

if you have the cash and time, search for a matrix infiniti green dot, crystal chip 2.0, or a DMS4 modchip, and replace the neo12 chip. the built in memory will come in handy for booting .elf files.

Alright. I don't mind the avis and stuff, I can watch that elsewhere, it's just a pain burning all those DVDs and then having to replace the lens when it goes.
I don't use the console that much (more than before though) so I'm trying not to fork out too much money.

Thanks for the quick answers.

then you can just go with the hdd/hdloader setup. when you get a new hdd, get a nice, hefty size one. 200 or 300 gigs should be fine. also, the best hdd to use is maxtor. it's the same brand used in the official sony hdd, so it's guaranteed to work and fit right. if you go with a western digital hdd, you will have to physically modify the network adapter to accept it.
