You should be fine then if it's Via 8237. I'm not sure on other ones that could come on a motherboard.

Whats the make and model of your board?
You should be fine but I can check it for you if you want.
What drive are you flashing - Samsung? Hitachi?

I too am trying to flash my Sons xboy360 drive that I replaced, I have the VT6307 VIA chip next to the SATA conectors on my mother board, its a Compaq Presario SR1222NX with 2 gigs of RAM memery.
I took out a Hitachi drive and am replacing it with the Samsung MS28
I had my son take it to a friend of his to flash the drive because he was /sead he knew how to do it, but when my son brought it back it still acts like a DVD drive and won't play the games. so I'v been reading up on how to do it my self, I'm ordering the SATA cable from Ebay today, I hope this is easyer then it looks on the net, 360 MOD site, they have step my step instructions on it also you can go to UTUBE to watch a move on the same thing!

I've done it with an n-force 6 chipset, its worth a try before actually buying a pci board. One thing to remember, it has to be plugged into the master port.
And for driveme, i'm pretty sure there are tutorials on swapping drives. I think it involves getting the original key and using it to flash the new drive, or something like that no positive but it is a little more complicated, why aren't you flashing the original drive in it instead?

Instead of flashing the samsung, I bought a used Hitachi drive from ebay and put my DVD board inside that drive and everything worked just fine! But I still have that extra samsung drive left over! I guess I'll sell it on ebay as I don't need it now!maybe i'll still break evon.

I realize this is an old thread that was revived, but as a note to the thread: I flashed a Samsung ms28 last night with dosflash16 with onboard nforce4 chipset.
So, with that said, I'd say, no, via chipset isn't mandatory. :p
