PS2 LAN CAT 5 cable

I have two PS2's and have connected them together through a router in the past.
I have just finished my basment and prewired the room for a PS2 LAN.
I used an orange null-modem type cable. It looks just like a CAT 5 cable but it's orange. I knew that I'd have to replace the ends to ensure that it was identical to a CAT 5 cable except for the color.
When attempting to replace the ends of the cabble I found that it only has four wires in it. There is no way to replace it or pull it through.
Is it possible that a PS2 LAN will work with only four wires, and if so in which position on the cable end ?
I'll understand it I'm out of luck.
