So I've got one of those 78FK DVD drives... and I only own a laptop. Is it still possible to flash the firmware? From what I'm reading, the SATA to USB dealy won't work on it... is there one now that works, or any other workaround?

yes you can, but you'll have to find one a pcmcia sata card with the via 6421 chipset in it, its out of stock at all of the places ive been to
