So here's my situation.

My desktop is connected via ethernet cable to my wireless gateway (GT701-wg) which connects to the internet.

My laptop connects to the internet via wireless and I'm trying to connect the 360 to my laptop with an ethernet cable so it can stream music/videos and share the internet connection.

I connected the 360 to my laptop and the laptop nor the 360 can't recognize each other. When I plug my xbox into my laptop, it says "acquiring network address" for a while and then "limited or no connectivity" I know I'm using the right kind of cable.

What can I get my laptop to detect the 360?

Open Network Connections on the laptop. Bridge the ethernet and wireless connections. Problem Solved.

Interesting, I tried that method about 2 hours ago and it didn't work, but I just tried it again and now it does. Yay. But bridging the connections doesn't let me use the internet on my laptop while it's added to the bridge, so it disconnects everything that is currently using the internet.
