I have had burn issues with this model running on Sony Vaio PC-100, Windows 95, and have abandoned it as a burner. (The Sony is now the kid's game computer.)

Why is the read speed nearly a quarter of the standard CD-rom (hitachi)that came in the box?

The HP 7200 is simply the slowest thing I have ever encountered.

Any tips for me?

1. Check the burn speed :P
2. Check that you have DMA enable for the drive as opposed to DMA
3. There are also speed restrictions imposed by the media.

To Check for DMA: (1) Control Panel, (2) System, (3) Goto the Hardware Tab, (4) Device Manager, (5) IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, (6) Right Click on Primary IDE Channel --> Properties, (7) Goto the Advanced Settings Tab, Make sure both drop down boxes say 'DMA if Available', Click OK, (8) Right Click on Seconady IDE Channel --> Properties, (9) Goto the Advanced Settings Tab, Make sure both drop down boxes say 'DMA if Available', Click OK, (10) Reboot.

The 7200i is an ancient model, and when it was made 6x was a very common read speed for burners. Actually I'm impressed that you have one that still works. Most of them, like the one I had, failed shortly after the warranty period ended.

Whoa that would explain things. Keep in mind that 6X is 900KB/s maximum and in reality the average results will be on the order of 600KB.
